Brace yourselves: This is a long one!
Evie’s POV
“Thanks for coming with me,” Keisha says as we get on the train to L.A. It’s a one hour ride from St. Monica.
“Of course. I’m just happy to help.” We sit opposite from each other on the train in a compartment towards the front. “How do you feel?”
Keisha rests her hand on her stomach. “Nervous. I know it’s supposed to just be a conversation with my and the adoption lady but for some reason, I feel like I’m gon say something wrong.”
“You’re not going to say anything wrong Keish.” I smile at her. “You just be you and everything will fall into place.
“Thanks girl.”
We ride the rest of the way in a comfortable silence.
Keisha gets off the train first and I follow her. She pulls out her phone and looks up the address again.
“Okay. It says we’re only five minutes away. Just gotta walk down Humboldt and pass that culinary academy.”
“Charleston?!”
Keisha looks at me with one eyebrow up.
“Yees. It says we’ll pass Charleston. It’s just a block from the adoption agency. What’s the big deal?”
“Nothing. It’s just that Tony is going there next year. I just got excited that’s all.”
Keisha rolls her eyes. “Okay… Well, let’s keep going.”
We pass by Charleston and it is beautiful. It looks like an Ivy League school. There are brick walls and dark blue pillars. It’s also surrounded by beautiful black gates. I don’t see much more as we’re walking on the sidewalk but the school is good sized; it takes up three city blocks.
“Anndd we’re here.”
I look up at the building and it’s huge.
Family Connections
There are glass windows around the entire building. It’s about 40 stories high. We walk inside and there is a Peet’s Coffee on our left. I can’t stop my mouth from watering at the smell of vanilla scones.
“The lady said I have to go up to the fourth floor,” Keisha says, pulling me out of my thoughts.
“Oh. Okay.” I start to follow her towards the elevator.
“Did you wanna get something?” Keisha asks as she hits the up button.
“Maybe on the way out,” I shrug.
“Okay.”
We get to the fourth floor and step out into a small lobby area. On the left are two plush, mint green chairs with a small coffee table in the middle. I spy a few copies of Seventeen and Teen Vogue so this must be the floor where they recruit pregnant teenage girls. There’s also a Keurig coffee maker where you can select and make an individual cup of coffee.
Straight ahead is a secretary with jet black hair. She has on bright red lipstick and a no nonsense look.
“I’m super nervous now,” Keisha whispers to me.
“It’ll be fine.” I take her hand and walk towards the desk.
“We have an appointment for 10 a.m. with a Hannah Brown,” I say to the secretary.
She immediately smiles. “You must be Keisha!” She sticks her hand out to me.
“Oh no.” I nudge Keisha forward. “This is Keisha. I’m just moral support.”
