The Graveyard

Sunglasses and headphones on, walking between the tombstones, the only sound I can hear is the leaves crunching beneath my converse. I make a point to look down as to not make eye contact with any of the spirits walking around. They leave me alone because they assume I'm as dim and blind as the average Jane. I'm no average Jane.

I take a seat next to a large oak tree and sip on my iced coffee enjoying the summer breeze. Breathing in the fresh air, hearing the birds singing. I stay this way for quite a while, until it gets too warm, so I stroll back to my car. Since I am good at minding my own business, I didn't even see the couple make their way in. Now aware of their presence, I give them a look and I can see the girl is surrounded by spirits, at least 40. My eyes go wide and I'm stuck in my place. I see what I can only describe as a gold thread come out from her hand and stretch out connecting with dozens of spirits. As soon as it stops she drops to the ground and the spirits are gone.

Not giving it a second thought, I sprint over to where her body lays. Before I can get close enough to see if she's breathing, I'm grabbed around the waist and pulled back. They put me down and I spin around fast ready to hit someone. I'm caught off guard by their appearance.. A tall muscular young man dressed head to toe in black. His face is beautiful but distraught. I ran over here so fast not thinking my guards are down. His emotions take over me. I felt angry and worried. He let me go and I had to catch my breath.

"What the hell is wrong with you? You don't just grab strangers! Especially when they're in the process of trying to help someone!" I yelled at him.

"Don't touch her," he said simply.

I fixed my t-shirt from riding up past my belly button and tried not to yell again.

"Are you not going to do anything?" I asked, stepping toward the girl again. His eyes went wild and he took two steps toward me.

"I'm not fucking around, leave her alone she's fine."

"Look here dude, if you keep talking to me like that you're going to find yourself on your ass too." I raised an eyebrow at him waiting for him to push it. He seemed taken aback at my attitude. "I watched her drop to the ground right after," I paused not wanting to sound crazy.

"Right after what?"

"Nothing, nevermind," I said.

"Look, if you don't believe me just wait here."

"What? You want me to just stand here with you?" I let my guards down slowly to see how he was feeling. The anger was gone but the worry was still very present.

"Yeah, it won't take long. Just stand here and you'll see that she's fine." his expression serious.

"Fine. I'll wait."

We stood together in silence, I couldn't take my eyes off the girl. It felt like I had been here forever. Finally, she started to stir. Her eyes opened and she got up.

"The veil is looking amazing!" she said as she dusted herself off not looking up.

The guy cleared his throat and she looked up seeing me standing there. Her eyes went wide for a moment but she gathered herself quickly.

"See, I told you she was fine." He raised an eyebrow at me.

"So you did. I'm glad you're okay," I nodded in her direction. "I'll be going then."

I nodded in the guy's direction and started toward my car. I could hear footsteps behind me but I didn't slow.

"Wait up"

It was him. I didn't slow my pace or stop.

"Wait, please"

I reached my car and waited for him to reach me.
