“You think I sit around all day, thinking of what to give you for Christmas?”
“Of course you do! You’re a good Catchy.”
“No! I’ve got better things to do with my time.”
“That is a lie if I ever heard one! I’m the highlight of your day.”
“…Okay, maybe you are. But still… Oh my, look at that.”
“What? Where?”
We were walking around the park when I spotted a particular flower blooming nearby. I nonchalantly walked right up to iy, and she did the same.
“What is it, Catchy?”
“It’s a Magnolia Grandiflora, an evergreen flower.”
“Which means?”
“It’ll never wilt, even if you cut it from its stem. Well, as long as you keep it nourished.”
“Wow… you’re such a nerd. But seriously, it’s beautiful.”
“I may be a nerd, but I’m a smooth nerd.”
I pulled out another Magnolia Grandiflora from my jacket pocket, and I gave it to her.
“I’ve been growing them since I was six. This one’s special, it’s the first flower I ever planted. I’ve always been interested in this sort of stuff.”
I could see the emotions welling up in her eyes. The fact that I could make her this happy with just a small gesture such as this, well, it’s incredibly satisfying. She managed to get over her shock long enough to utter a few words.
“You planned this all along didn’t you. Taking me to this part of the park, showing me the flower, and then giving me one, I mean.”
“What gave me away?”
And then, she leaned in and kissed my cheek. That was it, one kiss, and my heart wasn’t my own, not anymore.
“I love it, Catchy.”
We walked back home, hand in each other’s hand.
