Chapter Five
Lucina and her group prepared to leave immediately. The townspeople of Port Ferox pressed in on them on all sides as they returned to their allocated house, begging them to reconsider venturing into town and fighting through all those Risen. Lucina appreciated their concern on the matter, but she eventually shut the door in their faces, putting the townsfolks' doubts behind a wall. She needed some quiet to discuss the plan with the rest of the kids.
"You think we can do it?" Gerome said in that blunt way of his.
"I think we have a snowball's chance," Severa said before Lucina could speak. "It all depends on our strategy-Risen are stupid and predictable. All we have to do is outsmart them."
"She's right," Laurent said-Lucina couldn't help but smile at the agreement between the two. Rarely did Laurent and Severa see eye-to-eye. The mage pulled his mother's notebook from his robes and rubbed the worn cover. "I've been writing down all aspects and weaknesses of the Risen down in a complete database. With all the information in one place like this, I doubt we'll have trouble finding a way to not only sneak by them, but decimate them if need be."
"Let's hope it doesn't come to that," Gerome said.
"Actually, I hope it does," Severa said, leaning against the wall and crossing her legs. "If we can take out all those Risen and help the townspeople reclaim Port Ferox, then why shouldn't we do it?" She cast a glance out the window and scowled. "I know I wouldn't let those corpse-breathed zombies run me out of my home."
"We don't have time for all that," Laurent argued-their harmony must have been short-lived. "It could take days to find every single Risen plaguing this town and eliminate them all. We've got to get to Lady Tiki and the others before Grima starts sniffing around and connects the dots on what we're doing."
Severa's scowl grew fierce as she leveled it at the bespectacled mage. "So you're willing to let this town rot away if it means we can get those blasted tools?"
"I didn't mean it like that and you know it," Laurent argued. "I'm saying that we have a duty. That duty is getting to Lady Tiki and helping her save the world. If we manage that, this town will never get overrun by Risen in the first place. But if we get caught up in...relatively trivial affairs, we could die. And if we die, the world doesn't get saved."
"I can't believe this!" Severa hissed, marching up to the mage and preparing to get up in his face. Gerome, looking exasperated, got up and stepped between them, keeping the pigtailed girl out of striking range. "Since when did you become a god, Laurent, huh? Since when do you get to decide who's worth saving?"
"I didn't say that!" Laurent roared. "Stop putting words in my mouth!"
"Lucina," Gerome said tensely.
Lucina stared at the wall, thinking, while she ran a whetstone down Falchion's already-peerless edge. Severa had a point, and Laurent had a point. The townspeople needed help reclaiming Port Ferox, but that could take time. Time they didn't have. While helping people out as much as they could was important, saving the world did have a certain precedence over that.
"Yeah, Lucina!" Severa said. "What do you think?"
Lucina put down the whetstone and rubbed her temples. After a moment of contemplative silence, she said, "I think that we can do both."
Laurent looked astonished at her answer. "Both?" he demanded. "How?"
Lucina sheathed her blade. "I think I have an idea of how to go about all of this," she said. "Let's go to the town square. I'll explain there."
