The silence was loud
"Y-Yuko stop it's ok" Naruto muttered looking down
A man scoffed "You don't understand. That thing-"
"Is a kid"
The interruption was immediate, final"
Yukon's gaze sharpened
"I don't care what stories you tell yourselves to sleep at night. I don't care what fear you're hiding behind. Yuko's voice dropped quieter but somewhat heavier "What I see is a boy being treated like less than a human"
Naruto's grip tightened on Yuko's sleeve
His chest felt weird
Warm, tight, confusing
Yuko looked down at him briefly his gaze softened just a fraction
"You did nothing wrong"
Naruto's breath hitched
No one had ever said that before
Not like that and mean it
Behind them someone muttered "You shouldn't interfere"
"Then stop giving me a reason to"
Silence again
Heavy, thick, uncomfortable
One by one the villagers started looking away
Not out of anger this time
Out of shame
