After Elijah and Hayley talked, Elijah wanted us all in the study.

"Everything that brought us here to New Orleans was a lie. This story that Sophie Deveraux fabricated, this struggle for control of the French Quarter, this war between vampires and witches, wasn't over territory at all, this was over Davina."

I roll my eyes at the young witches name, I'm not too fond of her just yet.

As Elijah tells us the backstory and my eyes widen at Sophie's will to kill Davina.

"Eight months ago, Sophie Deveraux and her sister Jane-Anne lost everything. Now, four months after that, a young pregnant girl wanders into their restaurant. Suddenly, all hope is renewed. Jane-Anne actually sacrificed her life so that her sister can use you to find Davina. If Sophie Deveraux is successful in capturing Davina, she can return Jane-Anne's daughter back to life. We thought we'd come here to wage a war for power. This is about family. In order to return her niece to life, Sophie Deveraux will fight to the death. That makes her more dangerous than anyone."

I was the first to speak up. "So we make ourselves more dangerous. I've learned and mastered most of mother's spells in her grimores. No one is hurting our family."

I look at my sibling with confidence. Nik smirks while Bex and Elijah smile proudly. "I've never had a doubt little sister." I smile at Nik then look at Hayley.

"If my last breath is keeping you both safe, then so be it." Hayley nods and hugs me. "I love you, Kara." I kiss her hair.

The next morning, Bex and I let Hayley sleep in. We walked into the study where we see Nik reading a book, Elijah reading one of our mothers grimores that I mastered, and a dead girl bleeding out on our table.

I look at Bex and shrug. "So, this is what you do the first time we're back together as a family? Vampire book club?"

I laugh at Bex. "If I would've known that it's family book club day, I would've finished reading my latest book."

Bex smiles at me but our brothers ignore us. "Reading edifies the mind, sisters. Isn't that right, Elijah?" Nik keeps his eyes on his book as he speaks.

"Yes, that's quite right, Niklaus." I look over at the girl then back to my older brothers. "And what's this business?" I gesture to her with my head.

"This is a..." He pauses and I look at him to continue. "...peace offering."

I glance at Nik who sighs and speaks up. "I presumed, after so much time desiccating in a coffin, that my big brother might be a bit peckish."

I roll my eyes and look at Bex. She does the same as Elijah talks.

"And I explained to my little brother that forgiveness cannot be bought. I'd simply prefer to see a change in behavior that indicates contrition and personal growth."

Nik rolls his eyes but has guilt in them. Elijah makes a gesture to the girl.

"Not this nonsense." Nik smirks at us.

"Well, I couldn't very well let her go to waste, could I?" I go to examine her neck.

"Well, I suppose I'll go fetch the rubbish bin, because she's staining a two hundred-year-old carpet." Bex says as I try to clean her neck without staining my clothes.
