"Commander Burns... Why have you come all the way out here? You should be back at the castle, nevermund your travel out here alone." Kaylum said, looking up at Mistyal who flew above our heads. Selvan walked in the air next to her. When it came time for us to travel quickly, he would simply lean forward and move in mid air at a similar pace.
"Laidon 771... If I'm honest, I was not expecting you to be traveling with my sister. I simply wanted to be reunited with her, no matter where that would take me." She said, looking down at him with a smile.
"It is good to see you doing better than I expected. I didn't like seeing your slow decent into..." He trailed off, "You can help us in a form of new... quest we've had thrust upon us. You are incredibly skilled with a rapier, Commander. Perhaps you could teach me? I'd like to lend my hand in another form of weapon." He said. She laughed a cheerful little giggle. It was far from Michelle's hearty laugh.
"What's with the formality, 771?" She asked, running a purple hand through his hair, messing it up badly.
"Gah! Hey! Also, Commander... I'd prefer you call me by my name." He said, crudely fixing his hair.
"Oh my Gods his hair is so cute..." Anthony whispered just as he passed me. I smiled.
"Alright, Kay. What's with the hair? You hated having it slicked like that when we fought together. Why is it so short now?" She asked with a teasing tone.
"It's clean and I like it. What? Would you prefer I let it curl itself again?" He asked, sticking his tongue out at her.
"That would look really dumb." Anthony chimed in with a teasing grin.
"Well then maybe I will do it!" He growled defensively, "You have no idea how good it will look, anyway." He huffed, lightly slapping the reigns of the horse and speeding up. I smiled, then thought about how he might look. I chuckled at the casual energy he'd be emitting. He did look like a soldier with his slick hair. Then I thought about how he would look with long slick hair. How did Mistyal see him when they still worked together?
When we got to the next spot to camp, a few hundred meters away from Nefeli, Kaylum pulled me aside behind a tent generated by a snap of Selvan's fingers.
"Decoda, I need your help." He said with a serious stare.
"What is it?" I asked, glancing at his gel stiffened hair. He looked away and glanced back at me.
"Could you please help me get this gel out of my hair? I know my hair's thick, but I don't just want to brush it out and risk breaking it." He said with an embarrassed grin. I gladly helped him out and when he asked if it'd be alright if I helped him with a trim, I reluctantly agreed. I didn't want it to turn out badly, but when I'd finished, he took some water from his waterskin and rinsed out the remaining gel and stray hairs that still stick to his skin. I watched him trim the scruff of his beard too. Then he wraithed for a moment to reveal short curly hair and a stubble filled jaw as he grinned. I was right. He looked a lot more casual. A lot more charasmatic.
When he emerged, Anthony doubled over, choking on the water he'd gotten from Michelle. He sputtered out a few surprised words before he started to choke and gasp. Kaylum ran up to him and somehow it got worse.
I looked over to the two and when I got there, I found Anthony unconscious. I looked at him and noticed the skin on his throat going red. To my left I heard Selvan grunt and a thud. I looked over just in time to see Selvan slap Hero accross the face.
"Let him go!" He yelled and gave his brother a mighty punch in the face.
"Herross, let him go! You can't just do something like tha- ack!" He choked out, clawing at his brother's hand that locked around his neck. Anthony gasped but stayed in his blacked out state. I ran up to Hero and pulled Selvan away from Hero. There was a sickening rip and blood spilled onto me and Herross as Selvan's body fell limp to the ground, blood gushing from his throat with a sick gargling sound coming from him. Selvan's eyes had rolled back to look like Herross'. I screamed and scrambled away, refreshing the scream again. Elliott ran in front of me, stretching his arms out to protect me. As Selvan's body started to stand, I screamed again. He turned to me, his eyes glowing golden like the brightest candle. The crimson mark on his throat faded to a pink, then white until it disappeared.
"Run! All of you!" He managed to get out before a spectral blade shot through his chest. Herross looked over his brother's shoulder at me with pitch black eyes. Elliott dragged me to my feet and ran towards Nefeli with me. I heard Mistyal take off and glanced up to see Anthony in her arms. I heard Kaylum and Michelle's footsteps behind us and noticed that Mistyal and Anthony took the lead. They headed towards the library. Before we could enter the village, I pulled out of Elliott's grip, getting my arm scratched up by his claws and stumbled backwards while starting to cry.
"Please, anywhere but back there!" I yelled at him, only to have him come back to help me up and into a tight embrace. That's when a terrified shriek came from the camp. I couldn't tell which of the brothers it was.
"Stay here." Kaylum yelled at us as he passed, running back to camp.
"Dont you dare!" Elliott shouted and tried to run after him. I didn't let him go.
"I'm not letting you go again, Lethallin. You're not going to die to him." I growled.
He looked down at me, a sort of betrayal in his eyes, but wrapped his arms around me in a tighter, more reassuring embrace than before.
