"Hey Yamaguchi?"
The pinch server flinched, looking up from the ground awkwardly before giving a faint smile.
They were walking down the street side by side, only it wasn't really side by side. Hinata was walking along the curb as he balanced with his arms outstretched.
Even with the street's help, Hinata only barely managed to reach the same height as him.
"Yeah?" Yamaguchi choked on his words, his face burning with embarrassment and Shouyou gave him a funny look.
"Do you know why everyone's acting so weird?"
He sweat dropped, avoiding Hinata's stare so quickly that it was like he'd been caught red-handed with special magazines.
"No!"
'Yeah nice going Tadashi,' he thought to himself, mentally cringing at the clear lie he just blurted out.
Yamaguchi was still on edge from the letters. Plus everyone didn't exactly make it easy to stay calm with the way they blatantly freaked out that morning.
It was practically contagious.
No, scratch that, it was definitely contagious.
Nothing was more unnerving than seeing how upset Tsukki got. I mean sure it didn't look like much, but Tsukishima made sure to constantly have Hinata in his eyesight every chance he got, and when that letter was read Yamaguchi saw his best friend who was the toughest guy he knew, worry.
His expression turned stone cold, his eyes darted towards where Hinata left, and his whole demeanor became sharpened like he sat on the edge of a knife. If you so much as breathed near him it felt like you'd suffocate from how intense the blocker felt.
Seeing Tsukki's unusual anxiousness made him way more nervous than he normally was.
Plus, he was alone with Hinata.
The realisation hit Yamaguchi like a truck and he nearly tripped over his own feet.
Unconsciously his cheeks flushed with a sudden blush and this time he looked away for different reasons.
"Yeah sure, I don't believe you at all!" Shouyou side-eyed him with a glare and his nose scrunched up in such a way that Yamaguchi had to resist the urge to blush again.
"I don't know what happened, but it's like everyone knows but me! It sucks!"
"It's, well.." He began with a sigh, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly as Yamaguchi fought with the right words to say.
"It's just.. Not my place to say, sorry," he added a bit guiltily and Hinata groaned.
"That's fine I guess, but still!"
An uncomfortable silence stretched between them. With each step they took Yamaguchi's anxiety steadily increased.
Hinata looked unbothered, but Tadashi didn't have a clue what to talk about as he watched Shouyou jump across where the curb was too broken to walk on.
He never had much interaction with Hinata anyways, it was always Kageyama or Nishinoya who hung out with him. Even Tsukki talked with him more than he did. I mean.. Just what was he suppose to say!
A nervous sweat broke out across his forehead and Yamaguchi suddenly wished it had been someone else who pushed Hinata out that door and not him.
"Say, if you could be any volleyball position that wasn't a pinch server, what would you be?" Hinata said casually, breaking Tadashi from his restless thoughts and Yamaguchi felt an instant wave of relief.
