Changing opinion of Foxes over the years

So Neil kinda snuck his way into being your favourite character from the books <3 As the author, how do you feel about the other characters? Has this changed much, other than Neil? I mean, some of them must be like old friends, living inside your head. (Do you think you would be friends with any of them IRL? )

Yeahhh I have a bad habit with writing where I always like the secondary character more than the central character. For most of The Foxhole Court's life, Andrew was my favorite. From time to time Neil wasn't even the second favorite, he was just the vehicle for the story I wanted to tell. The more Neil evolved, though, and the more desperate & jagged & broken but brave he became, the more I adored everything about him. It's a nice change of pace to be so attached to the actual main character, ha.

As far as the other Foxes go, not much has changed there. Each passing year just makes me a little fonder of them and gives me a little more understanding of who they are and where they've been. Kevin's fallen a little bit in the rankings, but even the so-called "least favorite" Fox still has my whole heart, so it's not like he went very far.

I think the only other character who's shifted significantly over the years was Abby. In some of the earliest drafts there were scenes done from the others' POVs, and Abby & Kevin spent a lot of time together. Abby doted on Kevin when he wasn't putting his shoes all over her dashboard. They bickered all the time, but there was affection beneath their barbs. Losing those scenes–and then dealing with Neil's growing distrust and paranoia–shuffled Abby fast across the line from "Fox mother figure!" to "person we have to tolerate talking about".

If the Foxes would have me, I'd want to be friends with all of them. I've known them for so long that even their flaws are familiar, the way you learn to tolerate a BFF's or sibling's annoying habits. Not saying I'd go easy on them, because I'm not easy on many of my friends, and I'd love to get into an argument with Seth about his close-minded views, but I'd fight for and with any of 'em.
