The walk home was quiet. Not awkward. Not uncomfortable.

Just... quiet.

Naruto clutched the bag of apples tightly against his chest, stealing nervous glances at Yuko every few steps.

Yuko noticed. He simply pretended he didn't.

...

"...Why?" Naruto's voice was barely above a whisper.

Yuko looked down.

"Why what?"

Naruto shrugged. "Why'd you help me?"

The question lingered between them.

Yuko didn't answer right away.

Instead, he watched a pair of birds land on a nearby rooftop.

"...Because no one else did."

Naruto blinked. "...That's it?"

Yuko smiled faintly. "Shouldn't that be enough?"
Naruto opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Naruto slowed. "This is me..."

He looked toward the worn-down building.

Paint peeled from the walls.

"So..." Naruto rubbed the back of his neck. "Thanks for the apples."

He smiled.

It wasn't a real smile.

It was the kind children used when they expected people to leave.

Yuko recognized it immediately.

"...You're inviting me in."

Naruto's eyes widened.

"W-What?"

"It wasn't a question."

Yuko started walking toward the apartment entrance.

Naruto scrambled after him.

"W-Wait! It's messy!"

"I've seen worse."

"You don't understand!"

"I probably do."

"It's really embarrassing!"

Yuko chuckled.

"I don't embarrass easily."

Naruto groaned dramatically.

"You're impossible..."
