Nixie Cage

The air of London was always a pleasure to wake up to from my bedside window. From that window, I could see the historic London Eye. During the night, it lit up my room, making all the white space on my adjacent walls sparkle with hues of purple and blue but right now, the gray skies that were above made my room seem gloomier than before.

Moving in to this new flat with my mother, my little sister and brother, Kali & Kyle, wasn't all that bad. I got my own self-designed room, my sister got the princess palace she desired and my brother could cover his walls with bikini models that he dreamed of which was pleasurable (for him at least).

"Nixie, get ready for your first day at school!" My mother demanded almost in a begging tone. She had a habit of begging us to do things rather than ordering us like a parent should but we didn't pay too much in to it on most days. "You are going to be late,"

"Mum, I'm already out of bed," Oh, how I lied. Relaxing in front of the window seat of my room was quite the idea for getting out of bed any time soon. It's not that I dreaded going the first day, but I was so used to the idea of fitting in at my old school. Well, not quite fitting in but more like sliding through.

Once I gathered the energy to finally obey my mother's command, my feet hit the cold, bare marble floor that covered the landscape of my room. I picked out simple attire that wouldn't distinguish me from the crowd for I hated my face in the public eye. "This should be just fine..."

Because of my body shape, I couldn't wear anything too reveal. My bulging muffin top would completely have a mind of its own. So after choosing the Oxford University sweatshirt (the college I dreamed of) and the ripped boyfriend jeans in my hand, I gave my stamp of approval which was a short nod, then proceeded to the hallway where I found my brother and sister bickering back and forth.

"Mummy said that I could go in the bathroom first!" Kali cried, crossing her skinny arms over her chest, making her princess gown sleeves fall to her elbows. "I have my first day of school!"

"No, I woke up first. You know I did!" Kyle shot back, balling up his fists near his sides.

"Kyle. Why in the heck are you arguing with an eight year old?" My voice filled with annoyance at the sound of their opposing voices. He stood, compelled with thought to my question.

"Kali, you don't have school for another 2 hours. Go grab breakfast, princess,"

"Okay, Nix!" Her small feet tapped against the wooden panels, down the hall towards the kitchen.

"You," I placed my hand on Kyle's hand, messing up his hair with a small excuse of a smile. "Grow up buddy. Now, go ahead in." He took my orders then dragged his feet into the bathroom's door frame closing the door behind him.

Kyle and I's relationship was pretty decent considering that we only had 2 years between us. He could be pretty childish when dealing with his choice of arguments with my sister, but he was a good brother. My mother had no problem with him. Neither did I for that matter.

"Nixie, you like pancakes right?" My mother, Katherine, handed me a plate of syrup-covered pancakes paired with her classic scrambled eggs. "I wasn't sure when I was making them..."

I glanced up at her worrying face, seeing the loss of sleep under her ocean- colored eyes, making her look older than her real age. "Yeah, mum,"

"Ah, that's good," She leaned against the edge of the counter, taking in a short breath of relief.

"Mum. Are you worrying again?"

"Maybe,"

"Why? We have had our first days of school before," Kali nodded in agreement, stuffing her mouth with slices of her pancake. "So, don't stress,"
