Jughead woke up to the sound of a baby crying. He rubbed his eyes and slowly got up and made his way to the nursery that was across the hall from his and Betty's room.
He walked in and saw his son Nathan sitting up in his crib crying. He scooped Nathan up from his crib and held Nathan in one arm, the other searching the crib for his pacifier. Finally, he found it and he quickly popped the binky in his son's mouth. Almost immediately the baby's crying quieted until he was completely silent.
"Happy first birthday little man." He said softly with a smile on his face. It was hard to believe that exactly a year ago his wonderful wife had brought the little human he was currently carrying into the world. Jughead had never seen himself being a dad.
It had nothing to do with not wanting children though. No, the kids were amazing the problem was him. Growing up he hadn't had the best father figure and while his relationship with his father was miles better he was still insecure he wouldn't be able to be the father the child deserved.
He and Betty had never touched the subject either, both completely content with their relationship. It was perfect as it was and he had seen no need to bring a kid into the matter. That was until Betty had told him she was pregnant. He had felt joy like he had never experienced in his life, not even when he had tied the knot with Betty. All the doubts he had ever had about being a good enough father completely faded. Now here he was cradling his one-year-old son to his chest.
The faint smell of pancakes flooded his nostrils and soon he was downstairs in the kitchen. He placed Nathan in his playpen and walked over to Betty. Wrapping his arms around waist her from behind, he rested his chin on her shoulder and sighed contently. "Good morning." She said not taking her eyes off the pancake she was flipping.
"A good morning indeed." He pecked a kiss to the side of her face and she smiled.
"Our son's one today." She stated proudly and he felt the same pride as her. They made it one year with their amazing son and it had all gone so smoothly. He wasn't use to this much peace, his whole highschool year had been filled with so much chaos. Ranging from murders to crazy organ harvesting cults and everything in between.
But now to just live, with his wife and kid, without anyone trying to harm or kill them was nice. A small part of him was waiting for the other shoe to drop, for all the peace and calmness in his life to be snatched away from him, like it had been so many times before. But that hadn't happened and for that, he was forever grateful.
"It's amazing." He grinned and he gave her another kiss to the cheek before letting go of her and going to set the table. Ten minutes later they all sat at the table Nathan in his highchair and Betty and Jughead on either side of him. There was a stack of pancakes in front of him, way too much for any one-year-old to eat, but it was supposed to resemble a cake.
Betty stuck a candle that said one into the pancake and Jughead lit the candle. Nathan giggled as the fire flickered and they both beamed. They sang happy birthday to their son and Nathan laughed happily at all the attention he was getting. Both Betty and Jughead blew the candle out and Nathan giggled again.
"Our son is one," Betty repeated in awe. Jughead pulled the candle out of the top pancake and placed two pancakes on Betty's plate and three on his, leaving one for Nathan. Betty drizzled the tiniest bit of syrup on Nathan's pancakes and he instantly started eating. Jughead knew Nathan would be a sticky mess when he was done, he didn't mind though, he never did. He doused his pancakes in syrup and Betty did the same and they ate in peaceful silence, the only noise was Nathan noisily chewing.
He took in the woman sitting in front of him and smiled happily. "I love you, Betty Cooper." He said softly and she looked a little stunned at his declaration. They said those three words often meaning it every time, but it was different in this moment because the way he said it reminded her of the first time he uttered those words all those years ago.
"I love you Jughead." She smiled warmly and it made his heart swell. Seven years and she still did that to him. She really was his one true love, his epic love.
