Back to school today. I had a very heavy- for a human- backpack clamped loosely in my jaws as I ran. Jake was beside me, playing a game where he would come extremely close to trees, and then swerve out of their way. Donavan, who was in the grade below Jake and I and looked up to Jake, was playing with him. They let out little yips of joy, and the two were only brown and grey blurs- even though the world was in slow motion to us.

We're almost there, kindergarteners! I announced, slowing down at the tree line. I phased, and they did too, chuckling and pushing each other around. My backpack, which was now on the ground, was waiting for me. I picked it up, heaved it over my shoulder, and watched as Don walked to the left, where the middle school was. He was in eighth grade, and we were in ninth- high school.

"Don't forget Ember's birthday on Thursday, Jake," I said cooly. His thoughts darkened.

"Why doesn't she just go and celebrate with her friends she likes more than us, hmm?" he grumbled back.

I turned on him. "Ember has friends other than those in the-" I looked at some nearby teens, not wanting to say pack- "family!"

"Good, I'm glad!" Jake said loudly. "At least she has outside friends!"

I took a step back, shocked. Jake's face softened, and then he grimaced. "Nixie, I-"

"Go to class, Jake," I said quietly, turning and going into the school. I sat down at the back in home room. Several faces turned to look at me, but I looked down at the quiz we had. I answered it quickly, already knowing all the answers, and then turned it in.

The rest of the day was a blur. I turned in homework for every class, and when biology came, I even sat next to Allie instead of Jake, and he looked hurt. But I didn't care. All through class he tried to say he was sorry through his mind, but eventually I blocked him out.

Zach asked me about the dance at lunch, but I said I didn't think I would be able to go. "If I do, I'll go with you, though," I had said. He had grinned and nodded, walking proudly back to his table, where his friends were having a mini food fight. I had heard Jake's thoughts, and knew he didn't think I would say yes. I had looked over my shoulder at the table behind me, where he sat with his friends. And I had smirked at him.

"Hey, Nixie!" Allie called. I was walking to Language Arts, and she tapped my shoulder.

I smiled at her. "Yeah?"

"Do you maybe want to study tonight? I know you're really good at math, and I'm kind of-" she smiled weakly- "not."

I was surprised she hadn't asked some guy. I was about to decline, but thought of what Jake had said. I nodded. "Sure. Your house at four?"

She beamed. "Yeah, my house at four sounds great!"

"Okay, see you then," I said, going into the classroom.

I smiled. I had a friend.
