You all know the Disney Movie Pocahontas. If you don't then you should probably watch the movie before reading this. Disney covered a horrifying story with a fake love story, making it seem like history wasn't bad at all.
But who is the real Pocahontas and what was the actual story? I'm here to tell you.
Pocahontas's birth name was Amonute, but in her tribe it was quite often when parents change their children's names because as the child grew they learnt more about their personality. So when she grew older it was changed to Matoaka. She was called "Pocahontas" as a nickname, which means "playful one", because of her frolicsome and curious nature. Also because her father had a wife that he really loved and when Pocahontas was growing up she saw similarities between the two.
She was apart of the Powhatan Tribe, born in Werowocomoca va.
Her father was Wahunsenaca (Chief Powhatan), the mamanatowick (paramount chief) of the Powhatan Chiefdom. Her mother was never in any records, but most people think she died during child birth.
She had around a total of fifteen siblings named Mantequos, Taux, Matachanna, Nantaguaus, Pochins, Parahunt,Namontack, Nantahoack, Quima, Powacanos, Mehta, Pamouic, Secotin,Tomoco, and Tanacope. They were all half siblings, I know, that's A LOOOT.
