“Hey David,” Kaylee shouts with a gleam in her eye. I chase her to where David and Jayden stand on the side of the street. “Do you wanna go to the fair together? I was just about to head over there.”
“I thought we were about to head over there.” She elbows me in the side, and then turns back to give David a puppy dog look. I roll my eyes.
“Hi Jodi,” Jayden waves beside David. I wave back with a smile.
“So David, the fair?” Kaylee asks again.
David looks hesitant, as expected. He and Jayden exchange a look.
“Fine,” he sighs. “But Jayden’s going too.”
“That’s okay! As long as we can go together.”
He starts walking towards the fair, and she grabs his arm, skipping next to him enthusiastically. I hear David groan as they keep walking.
I turn to go home, when a voice stops me.
“Aren’t you coming?” Jayden still stands there with his hands in his pockets.
“No. Kaylee really likes David, and I don’t think she wants me around.”
“Are you sure? You said you were going before.”
“Well, I don’t want to ruin things for her. Lately David seems to actually be accepting her.”
I turn to leave again.
“Well, that sucks,” he says behind me. “I hate being a third wheel.”
Me too, I think as I continue walking. Especially when it comes to Kaylee and her mushy stuff.
I take a few more steps, and then turn back to see him leaving. Would you wanna be left in that situation?
“Jayden!” I call. He turns towards me, and I run up to him. “I guess I can go, just so you have someone to talk to.”
“Great,” he smiles.
We walk side by side behind the other two. Kaylee smiles and tries to talk to David. He mostly ignores her and rolls his eyes.
“I don’t get why he said yes. It seems like everything she does annoys him,” I say to Jayden.
“Oh, he can’t stand her,” he replies.
“Really? Then why has he been dealing with her so much lately?”
“I wonder..” Jayden says, smiling at the ground. A few seconds later my hand is in his.
