Antonio grabbed yet another handful of flowers, as he did every Thursday. Thursday was the day he went to visit his mum, and he followed that schedule carefully. He used to go to the florist by the cemetery, but since that had closed down he'd just grabbed a bunch of flowers from some random yard. He figured if he could get over his mum, then some strangers could get over a few missing flowers.
No one usually stopped him, but this week was different.
"Hey!" Someone yelled out. They had blue hair tossed into two space buns and a massive green hoodie that engulfed them. "Why are you stealing my flowers?"
Antonio froze in place, but didn't drop the flowers. "What?" He forced out. It sounded more like a snap and the stranger shrunk back a bit.
"Those are my flowers. Or well, my aunts flowers at least. I'm new here." Like that explains everything. "Why are you stealing them?" Before he could answer, they gasped
"Is it for a girl? Are you going on a date?" They narrowed their eyes. "She must be really pretty to make up for stealing my flowers, huh? They're my Aunt's best flowers, she works really hard on her gardening." Their tone is accusing, and they cross their arms. "I wanna meet this mystery girl that you're stealing my flowers for." They demanded.
Antonio gawped, unable to form coherent sentences because he was so dumb-founded. The stranger bounded up to him with a grin. "I'm Nicholas." They introduced themself.
"Antonio."
"Imma call you Tonio." Nicholas decided quickly. They look far too enthusiastic. "Now, lead me to your date"
Antonio wasn't quite sure how to break the news that they were heading to the cemetery. That he didn't steal Nicholas's flowers for some girl, but instead his dead mum. Real fun conversation. And from what he'd seen of Nicholas, they'd ask questions. Questions that Antonio wasn't ready to answer.
"So, what does the girl look like?" Nicholas asked, breaking the silence.
Antonio decided to just describe Livia, his current girlfriend. Then he wasn't entirely lying, right? "She has short black hair, though it's dyed purple. She's tall, very very tall. Taller than me." It was a simplistic description, like something you'd have to write while learning a language. "She has a septum piercing, and like several other piercings on her ears. She's pretty. Really pretty."
Nicholas gave a crooked smile. "Well, she better be worth my flowers." They joked.
Antonio didn't laugh.
Nicholas decided it was wise to shut up, and they spent the rest of the walk in silence. Until they approached the cemetery. Nicholas frowned. "Where's you date."
"There is no fucking date!" Antonio snapped. "I'm visiting my mum and she's in there," He gestured to the gravestones, "So take your stupid flowers!" He shoved the crumpled flowers into Nicholas's arms and marched into the cemetery.
