3: Light the Darkness

As you neared the door, your phone began to vibrate in your pocket. You fetched the quivering device and swiped your thumb across the screen, answering the call.

"Hello?"

"Ah, good morning, [Y/N]. Did I wake you?" You hear Takamatsu on the line.

"No, you didn't. I'm actually about to head out. So, what's the deal? You usually don't call me unless it's something important."

"It isn't something like that. I actually came to tell you that a Huge has been spotted on the shore."

"I'll take care—"

"You didn't let me finish. I want you to stand aside and watch the legion that I have sent for that objective."

You lift an eyebrow. What was the point of even going? You'd rather be the one fighting and have the legion watch from the sidelines.

"Then why should I go?"

"You're quite a stubborn one, aren't you? A Schutzengel pledge or a legion is something all Lilies should experience. All Lilies should partake in that bond. Not only does it offer greater merit against the Huge; your comrades and friends might be able to light the darkness that's inside your heart."

You want to believe that; you really wish it was that easy. Yet, you still have your doubts about joining a legion and making a Schutzengel pledge. You didn't need any more weight on your shoulders, on your heart. If you grew close to those girls... If you grew close to everyone... What if they leave you behind? What if you lose them? It'll be your fault. It'll be entirely—

"[Y/N]? Are you there? You grew quiet all of a sudden."

You lightly slapped your cheeks, ridding all thoughts of deep pessimism.
