Read, Joe, Read

Too proud was Joe who refused to read
He did not understand, his mind built weak
Every page you flip, you plant a seed
Which cures the sick, to which you earnestly seek

Too trusting was Joe who believed in every lie
He could not distinguish a man's lying tongue
The less you know, the quicker you die
Those who rule the earth are cunning and evil, exploiters of the young

Too naive was Joe who dared not dream
He had no faith, no trust in the boy he was, only to what it may seem
For you cannot truly live if you do not explore
It takes courage in the impossible for the lame to soar

Too arrogant was Joe who thought no one else was right but himself
He spat on those who opposed him, what a foolish child
Knowledge lives in paper, try indulging into the book shelf
You are nowhere near perfection; read so you'll learn to tame the wild

Too unfortunate was Joe; an empty mind can be filled
He sulked in his room, but even an arrogant mind can be killed
For to be hungry means the will to be fed
To be taught and nourished until you go to bed

Author's Note:

I wrote this poem (about the importance of reading) as an assignment in my English class. I thought it was good but my teacher said otherwise and gave me a low mark on this.

Nevertheless, I'm proud of it.
