A week after the Incident with Satan, Shiro was fine, save for his lost fingers and slight anemia from losing so much blood when Satan possessed him for the extended period of time. It was suspicious in and of itself and when Rin told them his bullshit story, nothing in it explained why Shiro was still alive and well, which is exactly what the teen wanted. It would probably be more suspicious if he actually had the answers.

The fact of the matter was, since Rin was the only living witness of that night who was actually fully conscious the whole time and he was a newbie to the whole Demons and Exorcists thing, he couldn't possibly explain everything and some things would just remain a mystery forever unless Rin decided to speak up. And that was something he would only do if it was absolutely necessary. If anything, Shrio should be grateful he wasn't dead.

Mephisto the Asshole Clown Demon was called in to hear the story for himself to make a report for the Vatican(Fuckin' traitor. Don't trust that guy, Rin, he's a Demon King and he likes to use people as playthings)to cover up the incident effectively by feeding them lies. That meant that Rin couldn't mention that he'd actually interacted with the demons in Gehenna. Rin didn't trust the Demon one bit, even without Satan telling him so. He seemed like a shady dude, not to mention a real creep with that too-wide grin of his and almost offensively clashing wardrobe.

According to Rin, Shiro was possessed by Satan, who spent about five minutes maniacally cackling before he told Rin that he was taking the boy home and he would be a demon instead of the whimpy human he'd been raised as. Rin mouthed off and Satan got pissed, burned the shit out of his vocal chords in reprimand, and then told Rin he'd be lucky if he could even talk after that. (Mephisto said Rin drawing the sword shortly after getting the wound might have saved his ability to speak thanks to his incredibly powerful healing factor).

Rin carried on talking even as his throat started feeling painfully raw–Satan decided he would steal his child back from Shiro in revenge for Shiro banishing him and stealing his woman years ago, ripped off Shiro's fingers to provide the blood for the Gehenna Gate, the portal formed, and Rin was thrown in, holding the sword.

He dropped halfway(he didn't say in detail how exactly he'd dropped halfway in and no one pressed for the detail)into the Gehenna Gate, then used the sword to anchor himself when he pulled out of it(Mephisto chimed in and said that Rin's ability to pull away from the Gate was probably due to him not not understanding or knowing anything about the demon world and that let him get out of it easily, cementing this version of the story in the report and encouraging Rin to keep bullshitting because apparently, this sounded convincing to two adult men who claimed to be able to read people well). Rin needed to get rid of Satan and the portal, so he unsheathed the sword and sliced the portal in half.

Satan had shrieked and hurled curses at Shiro for raising his own child to hate him and finally had to go back to Gehenna.

Rin finally finished and coughed from the soreness of his throat. A few drops of blood appearing on the elbow of Rin's hoodie was enough for Shiro to be worried. He looked to Mephisto beside him. "Is there really nothing we can do to heal that better?"

The demon shook his head. "No. He's lucky it healed at all. The best we can do to make it less uncomfortable is making sure he's not talking enough to cough up blood like that. Same with talking too loud and in higher octaves. It's clear he doesn't have the ability to speak anything but lower octaves with this injury. Although, if you want a sort of remedy, tea is all I can give you." Mephisto explained before turning to Rin. "You're lucky you didn't get stuck with Acid Reflux, honestly."

Yeah, that would really suck for you, buddy. Guess you'll have to drink tea as your only remedy, but that ain't too bad. Your senses will also be much more sensitive, so be prepared for oversensitivity that may lead to the occasional migraine. That clown will think it's just another thing that differentiates you from normal demons since you're a special circumstance.
