Hi! My name is Mali. My friends, the few that I have in this place, call me Mal. By ''this place'' i mean an all girls orphanage and by friends I mean the only two girls here that are nice. I mean the workers here are nice but the girls can be vicious. Anyways I've lived here as long as I can remember. The workers say I was dropped off at just a few weeks old and since no one knows when my birthday was that day has been considered my birthday ever since. I've been here a long time now. Ive tried foster parents but none of them were nice or even close to what i looked for in parents. My 16th birthday is tomorrow meaning only two more years til I can get out of this place and have a life. The only other thing I have to look forward to is getting to read the letter that was left in my crib. The workers recently found it hidden on a shelf marked "open in 16 years.'' They asked me if I wanted to just open it or wait. I decided I would wait. I mean I guess Im just scared. Most of the other girls would have jumped at the opportunity to know something about their family but I have a bad feeling about this. I think its big and I'm not sure I WANT to know... My parents abandoned me. They left me here in the orphanage and then think I'll want to know about them? No, I don't. The only problem is, that may not be what the letters about.
