Happy birthday Ruel!

Ruel POV

"Dude, just invite her, it's not like she's going to say no straight to your face. It's a birthday party." Cole said, patting my shoulder, encouraging me. We were sitting at our regular table in the middle of the cafeteria. Most of our friends were here, but not all of them.

"Yeah, you have to invite her, Ruel. If you want, I could talk to her and ask her if she likes parties." This time Maria tried to convince me.

"It's not a bad idea, but I still don't have the balls to do it, I'm sorry guys."  I stood up and left the cafeteria, leaving my friends with the worlds in their mouths. I was exhausted of them telling me to invite her.

It all started that same week, when I told my friends about my birthday party. Fortunately, that year, my 18th birthday fell on a Saturday and I planned a costume party because of Halloween's celebration two days after. At first, I thought a costume party was a bit ridiculous and childish, but my friends persuaded me with the 'we'll get so fucking wasted, we won't even care'. Then, one of the girls, Maria, came up with the question: 'are you inviting y/n?' I almost passed out. None of my friends knew about her and my crush, only Maria. So, everyone started interrogating and pressuring me to invite her because it was a great opportunity to talk with her (or, you know). I kept contradicting their suppositions. I knew my crush for her was intense, but she would never like me back.

I only found out about y/n's existence and attendance at my school when, after getting caught smoking on school grounds, I had to clean the music room. I walked into the room when the school's time was over and she was there, playing the piano. We were both quite surprised with each other's appearance that we maintained eye contact silently for a few seconds. She excused herself, told me that she didn't want to bother and tried to leave. I stopped her and asked her to stay. I don't even know why I did it, I guess I was intrigued by her, but now I don't regret it at all. She helped me clean the music room while we chatted. A month before that, I wouldn't even have spoken to her, y/n would have never caught my eye. But, that afternoon, I found out y/n is the sweetest, most beautiful human being.

After that, y/n and I didn't talk much. I was usually with my friends and it was difficult to find her, since she was a year younger and I still don't know where she goes to eat her lunch. Whenever I could I would stop in the middle of the hall and say hello, ask how her day was going. Those few minutes I get to speak to her transform my day, everything seems better.

After leaving the cafeteria because my friends' words were flooding my brain, I walked out of the building to breathe, maybe smoke. But, walking down the hall, my eyes caught the image of y/n standing in front of her locker fitting her books in. I walked up to her from behind and put my hands on her eyes so she couldn't see me or turn around. She jumped a little and gasped. "Who is it?"

"The most handsome, kind and lovely human being on Earth."  I teased her.

"Mm, you cannot possibly be Harry Styles." She giggled because she knew it was me. Now, she was the one teasing.

"Hey! I am the most handsome, kind and lovely human being. How could you not guess?" I tickled her sides, making her laugh and ask for mercy. "I'll stop when you say I'm the best."

"Fine! You win, you are the best Ruel." I nodded and stopped. We kept laughing for a few seconds more, but I stared at her at the same time, mesmerized. It was the moment, I had to do it.
