╰┈─➤ 『 01. the case 』
cold wind brushed past taehyung's figure, his onyx strands falling into his cold brown eyes. "lee hyujin. age 34. repeatedly stabbed into the back with a stiletto knife." one of the forensic scientists told him, eyes raking over the clipboard in his hand.
"that's the twelfth in the last three months." namjoon muttered from beside taehyung and spared a glance at his partner. "this can't be a coincidence."
taehyung nodded and crouched down to eye the in blood covered corpse. "a serial killer." he stated with a monotonous voice. "every twelve murders have been exactly the same."
the forensic scientist — chanyeol, listened cautiously. "there's one thing different about this one though." once the two detectives turned their attention to him, he pointed at hyujin's neck. "there are choking marks and clear signs of a physical fight. they are as fresh as the stab wounds, so the killer and lee must have fought first."
"or maybe the victim was just highly sexually active." another voice said and taehyung rolled his eyes. "not the time for jokes, jaebum."
"you're so boring, kim." the officer tsked, before he got back to making sure no one got into the crime scene.
"god, i hate him." taehyung scowled and namjoon patted his shoulder once he straightened his posture again. "we all do. everyone's just waiting for him to get fired by now."
humming in agreement, chanyeol nodded. "he didn't even manage to write a report yesterday. it won't take long anymore and he's gone, trust me."
taehyung raised a brow at him, gaze shortly wandering to jaebum flirting with some of the watching women. he scoffed. "how did he even get this job?" his partner followed his stare and shrugged with a grimace on his face. "i have no idea."
"back to the case. none of fhe victims before lee have fought the killer before. he always attacked from behind, surprising them with a stab in their back. but this time it seems as if the killer attacked face-to-face. that's unusual." chanyeol furrowed his brows.
hooking his fingers under the belt of his slacks, taehyung stayed silent. he observed the corpse with narrowed eyes, trying to find anything else even slightly suspicious. "great. so now he's changing his motive. or maybe it's someone else now. we've been searching for the killer for three months already and we still don't have anything that could be useful!" namjoon exclaimed. "the killer isn't a beginner. he knows exactly what he's doing. we don't even have a chance."
"because we're no psychopaths." taehyung murmured to himself and the other looked at them in confusion. "we don't think like serial killers. we don't know what's going on in their heads, all we can do is assume things. so obviously we don't have a chance."
namjoon blinked at his words, tilting his head. "now that was the worst motivation speech i've ever head."
the other detective rolled his eyes and folded his arms in front of his muscled chest. "if we want to find the killer — then we need help."
"we are the help."
"yes, we usually are. but this is different, namjoon. we haven't had a serial killer in this town since the arrest of park jimin; and that was four years ago." taehyung scoffed.
chanyeol averted his gaze back to the corpse. park jimin. he could still clearly remember working on his case.
jimin was smart. terrifyingly smart.
he had been wandering around the city for years — killing like there was no tomorrow. and the police was never able to even catch a glimpse of him. his victims didn't have any of his dna on them, he never left his murder weapon on the crime scene. there was not a spot that could have lead them to him. everything was perfect.
it was as if he had never been there.
his victims were brutally murdered. cut off limbs, ripped out nails, hair and teeth, obvious marks of torture on every single body. the worst case was — in chanyeol's eyes, a beheaded woman.
but what shocked everyone the most, was the day he finally got arrested. "you're a murderer!" the press constantly yelled at jimin. but instead of earning themselves a look of regret, sorrow or fear — they saw him grin. "what's one less person on the face of earth, anyway?"
it was sick.
park jimin was a sick man.
the thing was; none other than detective kim taehyung arrested him. till this day, no one knew how he did it. but taehyung was almost as smart as jimin.
without the psychotic traits.
namjoon chewed on his bottom lip in thought, watching as his partner walked around the crime scene with a concentrated look on his sharp face. "what do you have in mind then?"
"how do you catch a psychopath, namjoon?" taehyung muttered, turning back to the other detective with a smirk. "with the worst of them all."
"what do you mean?" chanyeol butted in and namjoon looked just as confused. "we're fighting fire with fire." taehyung then said, sparing one last glance at the coprse, before he started to walk out of the crime scene.
running to catch up with him, namjoon slowed down beside his partner again. "we'll catch this serial killer. trust me on this one." taehyung said, taking out a cigarette to lift it up to his lips.
