𝐓he strong smell of rain surrounded you as you made your way through the castle's corridors, walking to Herbology to help Professor Sprout. The second year at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry couldn't be too bad. She had said, "Y/N, could you be a dear and help me with the rest of the mandrakes?" and of course you said yes.
As you hurried through the rain and entered the greenhouse, you saw Professor Sprout talking to another student. He didn't look familiar to you so you paid no mind at all. "Hey Professor, sorry it took so long, I had to put on some warmer clothes since it's raining." You smiled and held your arms over your chest, the cold wind sending a chill down your spine.
Professor Sprout smiled back at you and looked back to the unfamiliar boy. "Y/N, this is Neville Longbottom," She looked back at you and continued. "He will be helping as well since I needed a few more hands."
You nodded and looked at the boy now known as Neville Longbottom, studying his features. He had dark curly hair and very piercing blue eyes, you noticed his dimples and his slightly bigger front teeth as he smiled at you. "Well, hi there Neville, my name is Y/N, glad to be 'working' with you," You chuckled slightly since you weren't really working but just helping a professor out. Professor Sprout snapped you and Neville out of your small-talk and instructed you on what to do with the mandrakes.
The rain was still pouring and as it hit the roof of the greenhouse, it calmed your nerves with each raindrop. The rain was always so pretty at Hogwarts, it always made you feel some special way. When at home, the rain never matched the energy of the rain at Hogwarts, it almost felt magical.
As you pulled the mandrake up, it's scream was horrible and almost went through the earmuffs you had been given by Professor Sprout. You looked over at Neville and his face was extremely pale and it looked as if he was about to faint due to the screams, yet you continued to put the mandrake into another pot and plant it.
"Oh Neville.." It sounded from Professor Sprout as she watched him fall to the slightly wet floor of the greenhouse. Your gaze followed hers and you audibly gasped as you went around the large table and knelt down next to the unconscious boy. "We should bring him to Madam Pomfrey, she'll be able to help." Professor Sprout agreed and called for the Care of Magical Creatures' teacher Hagrid to take Neville to the hospital wing since he was a lot stronger than any other teacher.
After Hagrid brought the boy to the hospital wing, you stayed around Herbology to finish helping Professor Sprout. "And that's the last one, thank you Y/N! You can hop along with your day now, maybe go see to Mr Longbottom if you'd like." She opened the door for you and you got to the nearest corridor without getting too soaked by the pouring rain. You walked back to your dorm room, wanting to change so you could hang your other clothes up for drying. You got into your sweater and headed towards the Great Hall for dinner.
You decided to stop by the hospital wing first to check up on Neville and was met by another boy, he was tall with short frizzy black hair and brown eyes. His skin was dark and he smiled. "Are you going in? Neville told me that he spent time with someone while helping Professor Sprout with the mandrakes. You must be that someone," The boy looked at you. "Yeah, he um, he fainted because of the mandrake scream despite having earmuffs on." You looked at him, soon focusing your eyes on the room behind him. He moved out of the way and put his arm out as if to guide you inside.
"He's right down there, oh and also, I'm Dean Thomas. Nice to meet you-" He waited. "Y/N." The boy now known as Dean nodded and smiled as you walked into the hospital wing and found Neville laying in a bed, having a bunch of candy on the bedside table. "Oh hey Y/N, did you finish up the mandrakes?" He looked a lot better.
"Yeah, we finished it and Professor Sprout said she'd give both your house 5 points, for helping and my house 10 points, for helping and for taking care of you when you fainted." You smiled and looked at some of the candy. There were chocolate-frogs, Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans and much more. Apparently, hearing a mandrakes scream, even muffled, can be quite dangerous. Neville had been really lucky to not have heard it with his bare ears.
You eyed the Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans since you'd never tasted them. Neville looked at you and followed your eyes onto the candy, "You can have one if you'd like but careful, you'll never know which flavour you'll get." You nodded and reached into the little box, fishing up a grey-ish coloured jelly bean. You put it in your mouth and started chewing but soon halted. The taste, it was foul and disgusting, never in your life had you tasted such horribleness. You quickly found a trashcan and spit it out, hearing Neville laughing from the bed. "I'm guessing you got a bad one," He stood up from the bed since he had mostly recovered and looked in the box.
"What horrid flavour was that? It was grey-ish." Neville took the box into his fairly large hand and read out loud. "Sardine." And you suddenly understood why it tasted the way it did. What a crazy flavour for a person to make.
"Come on, let's go to the Great Hall and get some dinner. It'll get the ugly taste out your mouth." He softly held out his arm for you to grab onto and you did. Going to the Great Hall, you ran into Dean again, him joining the two of you. The candles lit in the ceiling mixed with the night sky full of stars was always a good way to spend dinner, especially when surrounded by friends.
As you ate, you thought about how today had been good and how you had made a friend.
His name was Neville Longbottom.- ryanisnt_here
