(First person: Y/N)
It was a stormy night, the boat swayed aggressively but I was not bothered by this, I've been a sailor for as long as I can remember. Tonight was darker than usual, dark clouds blanketed the sky, and thick raindrops pelted the metal roof of the old fishing boat. Bright flashes of light and powerful rolls of thunder shook my core. I sighed and leaned back in my cot, exhausted, I could hear the sounds of the other sailors loudly gambling and swearing. They were in the middle of an intense card game and were getting invested. As I turned over on my motheaten blanket, I heard a light rapping on my door. It was the captain, he probably wanted me to some task. I swore and groaned as I heaved my sore body off the creaking cot. I opened the door, the captain proceeded to shove a pail of fish heads and bones into my calloused hands.
I frowned, "can't you just make one of the others do it?" I wined.
He didn't reply and pointed towards the latched door, I slipped my rainboots on and headed to the deck. I pushed past the tiny huddled mass of men yelling over a pile of cards, I slipped past them and stepped up onto the upper deck. It was freezing, the cold rain soaked my sweater and drenched my socks. I shivered and pulled myself to the front of the ship, I looked out onto the miles and miles of ocean before me. I nearly forgot why I was out there, I dumped the fish remains off the boat. As I began to make my way back to the quarters, a quick flash caught my eye. Slightly started I search for that light again, it doesn't take long to find the source. It looks like its attached to something barely floating upon the wild ocean's surface. Upon further inspection I find out it's a person! I rush back to my crewmates for help!
I burst through the metal door, out of breath, the men look up from their frantic game at me. "Th-There's someone in the water, I can't tell if they're alive-!"
The sailors stood up and began to rush to the top deck, I pointed out into the water towards where I saw the person.
"There! I can see them!" one of the crewmates yelled out, he began to grab at a net.
He attached it to a hook, and cast it out. After what felt like hours of holding their breath, the net finally came in contact with the person. They reeled the person in and dropped them on the deck. I finally get a good look at the person, and realize it's a man wearing a jet black wetsuit.
"We need to get the doctor, I think he's breathing!" Another man shouted at me. I promptly ran down to the deck below, nearly slipping on the slick floors in my rubber boots. I pounded on our ship's doctor's door, he opened the door with a groan, his bald head dawning his red beanie.
"What do you want?" he yawned and rubbed his eyes.
I gasped, trying to catch my breath, "There's someone- on the deck- he's breathing, but b-barely-"
He looked at me in bewilderment for a minute, "God, j-just bring him onto the lower deck, I'll need to prepare my tools." He dashed off, seconds later I could see the sailors lugging the man's body inside the cabin.
"Doc says he needs you to bring the body below deck, he's getting his tools ready." They nod and haul the still unconscious man down below. I follow behind, "What if he doesn't make it... what if..." I start to wring my fingers. The sailors gently set the man on the table and the doctor gets to work.
"You should probably go," he gestures to the crewmates and me, we shuffle out of the hallway and up the stairs back into the quarters. I lag behind a little bit behind, I want to make sure the man alright... I stand just outside of the Doc's door, I see him pulling out his scalpel while mumbling to himself. He proceeds to delicately slice away at his wetsuit. I can't really see much else, but I see him turn the man over, the Doc uses his scalpel to dig into the man's back carefully. I shouldn't watch, but overwhelming curiosity has now struck me, the Doc works in silence. The Doc has already pulled 4 metal objects out of the man's back, "What the hell-" I whisper to myself. I see the doctor fumbling around with something, I think its one of the objects he pulled from the man's back. It glows red slightly. My curiosity finally got the best of me, I lightly pushed the door open.
The Doctor looks up, "I thought I told you to go back upstairs." He says, as his eyes turn back to the odd metal device.
"What is that?" I asked cocking my head towards the small object
"I have no idea-" Suddenly you see a black object launch off of the table and fly towards the Doctor's neck. I jump back with a yelp, the now conscious man stood alert and aggressive pinning the Doctor against the metal ship wall. I hear the Doctor gasping in desperation to get his lugs filled with air again.
I begin to regain my wits and try my best to appease the man. "Hey, calm down, we fished you out of the water," He tenses up. "but it's alright now, you're safe, our Doctor just wanted to help you..." I reach out to gently grab his shoulder; he turns his head slowly to look at me. His deep ocean blue eyes took my breath away, his light brown hair was still wet from the ocean and the rain. He looked like he was in his early 30s. "w-what's your name? huh?" I see his muscles beginning to relax, "Look at me... what's your name?" I ask again grabbing for his arm that held the doctor in place.
"I-I don't know..." he whispers as his arm slowly falls to his side, his eyes were full of a mix of fear and confusion. His legs give up on him as he proceeded to collapse from exhaustion, I rush to him to try to catch him in some sort of way. I lower him to the floor carefully. I turn towards the now doubled over Doctor, "Doc, are you alright?"
"Yes," he inhaled "I'm alright, lets just get this kid sewn up..."
We cleaned the man up and even changed him into some clean clothes, he set him on our extra cot in our side rooms. "well, he's all settled in, I think we should settle for the night..." he nodded, "I still have a few things I need to get done, but I'll see you tomorrow."
