'This day could not get any worse,' I thought to myself as I sat apart from the rest of my family. My gray eyes locked on the window that I was sitting by. Behind me, the giggles and shrieks of my step sisters as they all partied, celebrating the Queen. I wanted nothing to do with our guest of honor, who has yet to come.
A shudder ran through my body as I watched an old, yet still sleek, suv pull up in front of our house. A young man stepped out of the passengers door and went around to the back. He opened it to reveal a woman in her mid forties with dark brown colored hair and matching brown eyes.
The woman walked pass the man and headed straight for the house. She didn't pay any attention to the man nor did she pay any attention to me while I was sitting in the window, watching her.
'Please let it stay that way,' I silently prayed as I kept my eyes trained on the woman while she came up to the front door. A knock sounded and the giggles of my stepsisters stopped. The eldest, Cara, walked over to the door and opened it, letting the woman inside.
The other two sisters of mine came running over to see the woman and to give her a hug. All while chatting away about different things with their voices overlapping each other.
"Calm down girls," the woman said in a calm tone of voice. "I've only just arrived you know," she added with a hint of love lacing her voice and in her eyes as she spoke.
I decided then, that this would be a good time to sneak out as I had so desperately wanted to go to the library. Even if it was just to get away from them. I quietly slipped my bag on over my shoulder and slinked pass the four females who were standing in the middle of the foyer.
Reaching the door, I silently turned the knob and slipped out of my house. As I made my way down the sidewalk, I headed straight for the guard station, already fishing out my ID and residence pass.
"What do ya want kid? The male guard asked as I approached the station. I gave him a small smile before handing him my information. He processed it and then looked down at me with a blank face.
"Here ya go," he said as he handed my stuff back to me and opened the gate for me to exit through. I gave him a nod with a slight smile and then jogged through the gate.
'Glad I was able to get out of there,' I thought to myself as I kept a quick pace while walking down the street towards the public library. I entered the small library that has become my sanctuary whenever she comes into town - and when I need to get away from my life in general.
Seeing the stone building that has been there for me through all sorts of problems in my life, a smile graced my features and I felt the safety of my sanctuary once again.
I raced towards the library doors and quickly placed my hands on the doorhandles. I pulled on them hard, trying to open the doors. But, I had no luck, there were locked up tight
'Damn! They're closed for the day!' I cursed inside my head as I turned around to sit on the curb of the street. I stared up at the top of the dome before turning my attention down to look at my hands.
'Now what do I do?' I asked myself as I slowly stood up from my spot on the curb. Giving I sigh, I turned around and began to walk away from the library and back towards my house. 'Guess I go home,' I thought with a shudder at seeing her again, of just having to deal with her again.
As I passed by the cemetery, I decided to make a stop to visit an old friend of mine. I haven't thought of her in over a year, but we were very close. Even though I had no idea what she died from, she didn't deserve to die that young.
I made my way through the paths looking for her grave. There were so many of them here, I just kept walking through the graveyard as I made my way to where my old friend was laid to rest only a year and a half ago.
'I really do miss her,' I thought as I finally found the grave. With a small, sad smile, I sat down on the grass in front of the gravestone. Memories filled my head of all the great times Ivory and I had spent together.
-
"Come on Carmen! I'll race you!" The young voice of my best friend called back to me as we took off racing down the sidewalk towards the library. A bright smile was on our faces as we giggled and laughed our way to our favorite place to be in all of Cemena - and with our favorite other person as well."You're in Ivs!" I called out to her as I sped up and ran pass her. Ivory gave a chuckle and then tried to match my speed. We both were running at the same pace when we reached the doors of the library.
"Well, I guess it's a tie, Carmy!" Ivory said in between taking deep breaths. We were both so out of breath from our race. As soon as we recovered, we shot the other a smile and then she placed her hands on the door handles to let us in.
"Let's always be friends, okay?" She asked me as she turned back around to look me in the eyes. Her brown eyes locked into my pale gray ones. I gave her a smile and nodded to her.
"Always."
-
"Carmen! Are you serious!" The voice of a familiar sounding female broke me out of my thoughts as I realized I wasn't alone anymore. I was still at Ivory's grave, but Cara was now here with me. She stood over me with an angry look in her eyes."Mom came back for only a short time and you sneak off!" She shouted at me as I slowly stood up from my position on the ground. I stood there with my head down as Cara stood in front of my with her arms crossed over her chest angrily.
"Sorry Cara, but-"
"No buts Carmen, you're coming back home now and you will apologize to mom, understand?" She said to me, I just simply nodded and then followed her out of the cemetery and towards her simple silver colored car. I climbed into the backseat while Cara got into the driver's seat and we pulled away from the curb and drove home.
As we drove, Cara remained quiet for the most part. She didn't even spare me a single look. About a block away from our house, she glanced at me in the rear view mirror and let out a soft sigh.
"Why do you always try to avoid mom when she comes home?" Cara asked me while keeping her eyes on the road in front of her. I stayed silent, not wanting her to tell "mom" and then I'll get in trouble.
"Look she's only here for three day, just try to stick around Carmen, please," Cara said just as we pulled into our driveway. She unbuckled her seatbelt and turned to look at me. I gave a soft sigh and hung my head for a moment before lifting it up and looking straight into Cara's eyes
"Okay Cara, I'll try."
