"So, Hinata," Kageyama's mom begins as she wipes her mouth with a napkin, "I haven't seen you in a while, how are you?"
How am I? I haven't been asked that in a while. The truth is I'm not good. But what am I supposed to say? Well for starters, my mom died a month ago and I almost kissed your son last year and we still haven't talked about it and I got beaten up last week, so yeah, I'm pretty bad.
"I'm pretty good, Mrs. Kageyama! How are you?"
"Oh, I'm good, just working a lot. How's your mom doing in recovery?" She smiles, tilting her head. Did I mention no one knows she's dead?
"Umm... She's doing fine, I guess," I respond, shoving rice into my face so I can finish my food and get away from Kageyama's mom.
"Okay well, tell her I said hi!"
"Yes, ma'am!"
Kageyama has been done with his dinner for about five minutes and is waiting for me, so as soon as I finish my dinner and toss my dishes in the sink, we go to his room. Tears are threatening my eyes, and I'm focused on the ground, eyebrows furrowed, trying not to sob.
"I'm going to the- the.. b-bathroom-" I try to make an escape so I can cry for a second and come back, but opening my mouth was a mistake, because before I even finish the sentence, tears flood down my face. Kageyama's face distorts into a panicked and bewildered face, he obviously doesn't know what to do.
"Dumbass, are you okay? What the hell??" He begins cursing me out, sounding alarmed. I back up a bit and run into the slightly opened door, closing it all the way as I slide down the large wooden panel. "Hinata, hey, what's wrong..?" Kageyama tries again, squatting down in front of me like a parent would. A parent. One of my parents just died. I cry even harder. Kageyama's face twists further into a confused and concerned expression.
Not knowing what to do, Kageyama leans into me and hugs me. We're in a slightly uncomfortable position. I'm sitting with my legs crossed up against the door, wiping my tears with my sleeves at a rapid rate, while Kageyama has his long legs arched around me so that his feet are pressing into my back and his arms are around my upper arms. His head is resting on my shoulder, and his raven black hair smells like lavender.
"Boke, what's wrong.." He mumbles into my shoulder.
"My mom.." I pause, breath hitching. "My mom is d-dead..!" I start shaking violently with sobs, and feel the pain of it wash over me another time. I think it all the time, sure, but it's different saying it out loud. It hurts more, but I can't stop.
"She's dead, she's dead, she's really gone.." I breathe in heavily only to sob out all the air again. As I continue saying it over and over again, my heart unclenches more and more. When I run out of breath, I begin to dry heave, my hands now gripping the back of Kageyama's shirt. I feel like I'm going to be sick because I can't catch my breath.
"Shhh... It's okay, Shoyo," Kageyama says, hushedly and lowly. He brings one of his hands up into the back on my hair and starts rubbing my arm with the other. It's really calming. He lifts up his face so we're looking directly at each other, eye to eye. Our faces are inches apart, and both of our eyes flutter shut as Kageyama grabs my chin gently with his pointer finger and thumb. Our lips are about to meet and-
"OW!"
My senses are filled with a startling pain, and I'm sprawled out on my chest across Kageyama, who's flat on his back, hands rubbing his head.
"Who the hell sits in front on the door??" A familiar voice squawks. I look into the door frame and see Kageyama's aunt with her hands each gripping a side of the threshold, legs loosely overlapping at her ankles. "Oh, that's right, you two!" She chuckles. "Welp, I was just tellin' you guys that I'm staying at my boyfriend's house for a few weeks. Shoyo, take my room. Tobio, watch Ren or I'll fucking skin you. Take care, boy-o's!" She whips around and takes off down the several sets of stairs.
"What the heck..?" I angrily grumble, pissed that the door hit me and pissed that I didn't finally kiss Kageyama. "Who's Ren, by the way?" I ask, remembering what Kageyama's aunt had said.
"Ren is my cat. It just stays in my aunts room all day anyway, so nothing to worry about."
"Oh, okay.."
We look at each other awkwardly, thinking about what was going to happen.
"Hey, I'm sorry that I-" " Did you maybe want to talk-" We stare at each other more, our faces turning red because our sentences overlapped.
"Should I shower and move my stuff to your aunt's room?"
"Yeah, I'll show you where it is."
We walk down the hall and into a medium sized blue-walled room. There's dark blue flowers on the curtains and it's surprisingly clean, with the exception of cat supplies.
"Okay, I'll see you tomorrow, boke," Kageyama says to me in a hushed voice, since his mom is sleeping.
"See you, Kageyama."
We both stand there and as Kageyama finally turns to leave I grab his arm and hop up to give him a kiss on the cheek. "G-Goodnight.." I say, face red with anxiety.
"Night," Kageyama replies, leaning down again to give me a soft peck on the lips. As I shower and fall asleep, the feeling of our lips together makes me radiate warmth. We kissed.. We freakin' kissed!!
