"This is Alyssa," Alon pressed on, "and this girl is Erica."
Maria scrunched her eyebrows, obviously confused beyond compare. The one with black hair – the one who looked like Alon – was Alyssa, correct? Then why was he pointing to the brunette?
"Hmm, whatever." If the adoption of some creature made her the prime example of a woman, Maria would do it. Just as Alon had told her last night, because she had four children to look after and yet took on another girl – oh, she was so kind.
Besides, Alyssa or Erica – the only daughter she had housed for five years – wasn't even theirs because the original was accidently replaced at birth and was never found again.
Alon must have thought thoroughly, given they soon had to get many tests done and have the children take their vaccine and regular shots – and who knows – the government might impose some other restriction and have DNA checking done because population was really getting out of hand, even after inhabiting Mars.
And that might have exposed the child who had been born to different parents, but this adoption really saved them from some grave trouble of infringing the Constitution by snatching away a child from her original parents.
Maria truly believed in Alon's abilities; he was the epitome of perfection.
"Well," Maria mumbled, keeping her cup under the machine for the machine to fill it with freshly brewed coffee, "respect is everything."
After Alon's research would be done, he'd finally get out of that company – from a slave to the master, from the employee to the boss, from a middle-class low earning man to a high-class millionaire, at least.
Human Science had extreme powers in this world where machines are so prevalent, especially since Alon could recreate 'Ayurveda' as the Indians called it, ancient medicine which was unable to be made since the formula had been lost and the ingredients extinct.
Mother, have you ever experience being replaced? No! Of course not! Because I was the one who was sent away for the sake of your 'respect' in the Society!
Maria sighed. That again. Way to go ruining her delusions.
But was the mother of this child wrong? Living in the thirtieth century, Maria still didn't see what was wrong –
Then why are you back, Erica? Compared to Alyssa, you are just some peasant from the street sides. I don't understand why Alon is so hellbent on having you back, but I'll make sure that the image I've worked on for all this time isn't wasted away for someone as worthless as you.
