Connor's pov
Today was it. Today was the day. I'm finally going to a normal school with normal kids. Did it take a hell of a lot of convincing? Yes, but it was worth it.
I'm not like most boys my age. For starters, I was homeschooled for five years, went to a special Ed school for another five years and today is my first day at a normal public high school.
Oh, and I'm also deaf. Yup. I'm a deaf 17-year-old boy. That's my life. Other than that, I'm not very special. I don't have a lot of friends. I don't really want a lot of friends.
If I got friends then that would just be more people to walk out of my life any time they'd like, so I don't try and make friends. I had one friend and we still talk. She's mute.
I met her at my old school during an art class we had together.
It's always been my mom and I. My dad died in a car crash when I was eight. When I found out about it I was with Girasol. That's my friend's name, Girasol. It means flower in Spanish.
We cried. My dad was great, the best dad I could've asked for. We always went to the ice cream shop back in California. Fresno California to be exact. That's where we lived before we came to New York.
Now I'm here in my room getting dressed. It was pretty hard to convince my mom but she's letting me walk to school since we don’t live that far from it. Only a couple blocks away.
"Bye ma, love you!" I yelled, or at least tried. Who knows if I actually yelled. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I turned around to see my mom with teary eyes. "You need to stop growing." I read from her lips.
Sometimes we talk with paper and pencil or sign language but I like just reading her lips since it's easier for her. I smile at her and playfully roll my eyes. "I love you." I said, giving her a kiss on the cheek.
She pulled me in a tight hug and let me go, making me immediately miss her warm embrace. As I walked down our driveway I turned around one last time and saw her signing 'I love you more'.
I smiled, she smiled back. Then off I went. I had a strange feeling about today, but a good strange.
