Around what felt like dinner, I had completely submerged myself in the woods.  There was no North, South, East, or West to guide me.  The world looked the same every direction I looked.  I found a giant rock for me to rest on.  My feet were sore from walking endless hours in Pa's boots.  I didn't realize I was crying until I felt stinging in my eyes.  I opened my suitcase to take a refreshing sip of our well water.  It reminded me of home.  I lay down on the giant rock.  I used my winter coat as a blanket and tried to pretend I was under Mama's old quilt.  It was no use.  In my heart I may have been at home, but I was really alone, stranded in the woods.  I opened my eyes to find someone's name carved into the rock I was laying on.  "Samantha" it read.  That's my Mama's name.  Smiling, I took another rock and carved "Josie" right under it.  Then I drew a heart around both of our names.

I tried again to sleep but I felt so lonely.  I felt excluded.  I felt lost.  I felt scared.  But most of all, I finally felt free.
