"Hello. I'm afraid we started on the wrong foot," Captain Bellamy said. "I'm Captain Bellamy, but you can call me Bellamy. We don't much appreciate fancy titles around here," she smiled politely, a stark contrast to her former annoyance, and held out her hand to shake mine.
"Hi, my name is Delilah and I'm here for an interview," I said, placing my hand in hers.
We shook, and Bellamy took a seat behind the table. I sat down in the chair in front of me and pushed a few papers across the table. Bellamy picked them up, briefly flicked through them, and tossed them into a wastebasket beside her desk. I stifled a sigh, wondering why I had wasted away so many hours on the papers only to have them thrown away.
"So. Delilah," Bellamy began. "Your past experience seemed to be exactly what we're looking for, so you have the job," she said.
"Thank you so much!" I exclaimed.
"You're also the only one who came for an interview, but we'll ignore that for the time being." Bellamy had a small smirk, and I blushed.
I couldn't believe that I was so elated when nobody else had even come...
Bellamy said, "Don't feel bad, we could really use another set of hands. Now, before we show you around, you should probably know something. This is a-"
"I know this is a pirate ship, that's why I wanted to come," I interrupted.
"You'd do well not to speak out of turn, but it does make my job much easier. You would have been added to the crew regardless of your opinion of our... profession," Bellamy answered.
I nodded silently. We sat for a moment, and the silence had begun to be uncomfortable when Clyde walked in.
"Cap! There's an issue with-" he seemed to barely contain himself after shooting me a pointed glance. I guessed that he was about to release information I was not supposed to know. "With..." Clyde seemed to be at a loss for words. Bellamy raised an eyebrow. "You'll have to come see for yourself," he said, running a hand through his already rumpled hair.
"Yes, of course. I'll need someone to show Lila around," Bellamy suggested. "Is it okay if I call you Lila?" she asked.
"It's completely alright," I reassured.
"Tom is around, I'll send him in. If you'll follow me, Cap," Clyde requested.
He and Bellamy walked out, but I could hear their footsteps pounding into the deck as they sprinted toward the other end of the ship. I sat for a few minutes in silence before Tom came in.
"Hey, Delilah," He greeted.
"Hi. Clyde said you'd give me a tour?" I suggested.
"Yeah. I'll show you our rooms and you can pick one out," He replied. I grinned excitedly.
"I need to get my things from my house after we're done with the door. I did not think to bring anything because I wasn't sure I would get hired," I divulged. Tom nodded, but a crease appeared between his eyebrows. "Is there an issue?" I asked.
"No. No, there is not. Shall we get going?" He seemed to snap himself out of whatever mood he was in.
"Sounds good," I answered. We walked toward the bow and Tom opened a trap door on the floor. A slippery ladder descended into the inky black darkness.
"Don't worry, I have a lantern," Tom smiled.
"Okay, that's good. It's a little... spooky," I admitted.
"Trust me. You'll love it," he said. I couldn't detect any sarcasm, and he lit a lantern. Tom pulled a rope off of the hook on the trap door and attached it to the lantern. "I'll hold the rope and lower it as you go down. Make sure to take it off the hook before you try to pull it down," he explained.
"Okay..." I slowly went down the creaky rungs. True to his word, Tom lowered the lantern a bit every few minutes.
"Once you hit the bottom there's a switch. If you push it, a string of lanterns will light up the area," he called.
His voice echoed around me. The light revealed that I had reached the floor.
"I'm on the floor!" I yelled. "Let me just turn on the lanterns," I ended.
I found the switch and pale twinkling lights lit up the room. I gasped loudly in amazement and surprise. I appeared to be in a forest, and it was extremely beautiful.
*I know, not a whole lot happened lol. Don't worry, more interesting things will come in the next chapter :D*
