Oh wow
Another chapter-Recap:
I nod. “Not the first time I’ve had unexpected visitors,” I open the linen closet, grabbing a bunch of blankets and pillows. I toss them onto the floor behind the couch. “Move, move,” I make a “Shoo” gesture and they both stand up. I step in front of the couch, sliding my hand under it and pulling a lever. I hear a click. As I’m doing this, I realize that they both have a clear view of my ass. I blush, standing up abruptly. I walk back around the couch and squat, lifting it up. I drag it a few feet backwards, so it won’t hit the coffee table. I blow out a breath and go back to the front of the couch. I start throwing the couch cushions aside. I hook my fingers under the metal bar and lift. The middle portion of the couch lifts up and out, revealing a bed. I unfold the legs, snapping them into place. I grab the fitted sheet I pulled out and stretch it over the mattress. “There,” I step back. I turn to them. They both have expressions of astonishment. “What?”“You- You just pulled that out?” Patton asks. I nod.
“Today was probably the weirdest day I will ever witness.”
“What the heck do you mean by that?” I retort.
“Well, first of all,” He begins ticking things off on his fingers. “You found Patton, and I was searching for hours, you can see dreams, you don’t get annoyed with how dramatic I am, you made a killer chai, you’re strong, you’re a hot barista, you turned a couch into a bed in less than a minute, and you have a nice ass.”
I blush again and scrunch my face up. “Patton knocked on my door, trying to knock on my neighbor’s, that was something I was born with, I’ve met more annoying people, I’m a barista, it still wasn’t that good though, I’m not that strong, I’m not hot, I have a hide-a-bed for this reason, and no, I don’t.”
“Whatever you say, emo nightmare.”
“Really? ‘Emo nightmare’?”
“My Chemical Romance hoodie, purple dye in black hair, emo bangs, Nightmare Before Christmas posters, your extremely pale skin, and you witnessed my nightmare and didn’t even flinch,” At this, I roll my eyes. “Oh, and uh, your severe eyebags.”
“My eyebags? I’m a severe insomniac and I’m a night owl. I also help people through their issues a lot.”
“Like the orphans…?” Patton asks softly.
“Yes. I can relate with them a lot, so they open up quickly. Usually.”
“Orphans? Relate?” Roman raises an eyebrow at me.
“There’s an orphanage across the street from my cafe, I bring them the leftover pastries when I close.”
“Aww, that’s sweet. But why not a homeless shelter?”
“Three years ago, the orphanage was a homeless shelter. But they had all their funds stolen and they couldn’t stay open.”
“Oh… That- That’s so sad...”
“But how do you relate with them?” Roman asks.
“Oh. I, too, am an orphan. I was three when they died. Every night, my mother would have dreams of a violent and gruesome car accident. My father would have dreams of them being murdered. Both- Both happened. They were slammed into by an off-roader being driven by a high and drunk driver. Then they were murdered in the hospital.”
“Oh my..” Patton gasps quietly.
I shrug. “It’s just a matter of life. Like you have red hair,” I point to Roman. “And you have crystal-blue eyes,” I gesture to Patton. “It’s something that just can’t be changed. Again, simply a matter of life.”
“Is- Is that part of the reason you used to-?” Patton cuts themself off with a yawn.
“Yes, it is one of the reasons that I cut myself. But I stopped years ago. I had a lot of issues as a-” I jolt as Freja jumps off the bookshelf, landing squarely on my shoulder. “Freja! Don’t scare me like that!” I tap her nose and she squints at me.
“Mow!” She practically deafens me.
“Yeah, yeah, I get it, there’re visitors. But you can’t be rude.” She huffs at me.
“You have a cat!” Patton squeals.
“Frey-uh? Is that how you say the name?”
“Close, you pronounce it ‘Frayah’. It’s spelled F-r-e-j-a.”
“Ooh…”
“It’s Scandinavian. It’s the Norse goddess of war and fertility,” Patton yawns again, it’s really cute. “Shit!” The other two jump at my sudden exclamation. “I need to feed Shae, Mae, and Leia!”
“Uhm, who are Shae, Mae, and Leia?” Roman asks tentatively.
I sigh. “My guinea pigs. They’re gonna be so mad at me…”
“Ooh.. can we see them?”
“Sure. Follow me,” I lead them up the stairs and into my room. On the low shelf, there’s a large cage. The guinea pigs hear my footsteps and begin wheeking loudly while popcorning. I grab the bag of lettuce that I keep in the mini fridge in my room. I make a series of whistles, long, short, short, long, short. They all stop in their tracks, lining up at the door of the cage. I open it, and they all stick their heads out. I take all three of them out, setting them on the bed. The grey and white abyssinian, Leia, runs over and sniffs Patton’s hand, licking it. Shae and Mae are twins, the only difference is that the left half of Shae’s face is black, while Mae only has about a quarter of her face black. I sit down and Shae climbs into my lap. “You two can sit, just don’t crush them,” I pick up Mae and Leia, ensuring Roman and Patton won’t sit on them. They sit on either side of me, on the edges of the bed. I roll my eyes and laugh. “You don’t have to fall off the bed, you guys can scoot closer.”
“I just don’t want to make you uncomfortable-”
I make a face at Patton. “As long as you don’t intend to do anything, you’re fine.” Roman shoots me a look as if to say “What the fuck do you mean by ‘intend to do anything”?’, but doesn’t say anything. The two scoot closer to me. I hand each a guinea pig, Leia to Patton, and Mae to Roman. We play with them for a little while in comfortable silence. Roman’s the first one to break it.
“I- I have a question…” I turn to look at him.
“Yes?”
“How- Uhm… Do you think you could see your parent’s dreams because you were touching them while they were sleeping..?”
I think for a moment. “You know what, that does make sense. I always wondered about that...” I smile at him. “Thanks for that.”
“For- for what?”
“Now I have an explanation for it, even if it’s not true.”
He blinks at me. “I don’t think I’ve been thanked for anything by-" He, too, yawns. "By anyone except Patton.” {Am I projecting here? N o p e . Absolutely n o t - }
“That-” I furrow my brow. “That’s not healthy for one’s self-esteem.”
He shrugs. I turn to see Patton nearly asleep, slowly stroking Leia’s nose bridge. I smile softly, picking her up.
“Wazzat? Wuzz hap’nin’ ‘ere?” Roman mumbles sleepily.
How are they already practically asleep?? I shake my head. I take Mae from Roman, then also pick up Shae. I place them all into the cage, shutting the door on the cage. I put the bag of leafy greens into the fridge again. I turn back around, finding them both asleep. I’m too lazy to carry them both downstairs, so I sit back down on the bed. I lean against the headboard, realizing just how tired I am. I fall asleep almost as fast as the other two.
