The steak from the night before hadn't done it's job of taking Carmilla's mind off of certain distasteful things that occurred that evening. She hadn't even wanted to take home the sharp and delicate cutlery she'd admired from the Le Monte Hotel, instead she had flagged a cab and gone straight home afterwards. After having finished her morning bath with a glass of wine, she proceeded to call Marco.

A few rings passed before her acquaintance picked up. "Hey Fox, I'm craving those donuts from that cafe you always get them from, bring them on your way here-"

"Not right now, Carmilla-" her editor interrupted, "if you've forgotten, today we've made plans to ship the first 10,000 copies of your new book across the nation! The company's tight on hands right now!" She could hear his out of breath character.

"Well then I'm not coming to the office." She stated, exasperated.

"That's fine!" Marco was quick to say. "Probably for the better anyways! Your presence intimidates the workers and nothing ever gets done in the midst." The children's book author heard a few side conversations on the other end before the editor addressed her. "It's gotten really busy, I'll call back-"

She ended the call and threw her phone at the posh furniture.

Shall we retrieve these "donuts", My Lady?

Their master waved her hand. "It's fine. I've been meaning to get some fresh air anyways." She folded her arms and started towards her wardrobe to change.

"Would you like to take a walk in the park, My Lady?"

"Not really." Carmilla said to Toris. She'd released him to accompany her in his human form. His sun blonde hair glimmered from the day's light. Out of all her followers, he, the crested cockatoo, was the most talkative.

Despite her reluctance to spend her time idling away, she and her follower strolled through the park. They passed families, crying babies in strollers, happy children with excited energy, it was too much for Carmilla to handle. It was good that she wore her veil or else the adults would have noticed her glares at the jovial atmosphere. They found a bench to rest and Carmilla seated herself with the white box of donuts next to her.

"Care to try a bubble tea, My Lady? They've trucks in the park that sell them."

"Perhaps I've been allowing you and the others to roam too much, seeing that you're a regular here." She shook her head but her follower took that as a 'yes'.

Toris left her side and she sat alone. She turned to finish her box of donuts, as she'd already had 4 on the way, but just as she opened the box, she heard a little cry nearby. Previously, she would have ignored it, knowing full well it had nothing to do with her, however, it was a sort of noise that was interrupting her enjoyment of the dough confection.

She closed the lid of the box, stood up, and turned to address the noise behind her. It was a little girl. She was standing below a tree, after having made several failed attempts to grab at the balloon that had escaped her hand only to get caught by the branches of a tree.
