Shapeshifter

The final bell rings and I am so glad to get out. I immediately start heading for the door when I hear someone calling my name. I'm thinking that maybe it's the kid that I talked to earlier who wanted to be my friend but I turn around and I see that it's a teacher. My english teacher to be exact.

"Sam, I need to talk to you about your free write. I know that I told you to use your imagination but the stuff you wrote in here is just crazy and how on Earth did you fill three pages in just the 20 minutes I gave you?" He asks me. I shurg my shoulders and turn to walk away. I know that's not exactly polite to do to adults but I really don't have time. "Sam! I need an answer. What is this that you wrote about and why is your imagination so messed up?" He asks. I turn around as I'm walking away.

"Maybe I'm just crazy. I guess we will have to see." I say with a huge grin on my face. Then I turn around and fade into the crowds of students before my worried teacher can catch up with me. Suddenly I feel someone pull my arm and I automatically go into self defense mode. I grab the person and slam him into a locker.

"Whoa! Sam! Calm down. It's just me." It's the kid from earlier today. I let go of his arm and he turns around smiling at me. "You've got quite a grip." He says. I glare at him.

"You scared me. I thought you were someone else. Anyway, I can't believe this but I never got your name." I tell him. He nods his head.

"My name is Thomas." He says. I nod and start laughing. "What's so funny about that?" He asks me.

"Well, I'm so used to vampires having some otherworldly name like Alucard or something like that. Of course you could probably say the same thing about a demon named Sam." I say. He nods and laughs too. I'm  surprised by how fast we were able to trust each other. It actually has me second guessing his motives for being friends with me.

"You're thinking really hard about something. Is it something you can share?" He asks me. I just smile at him.

"I've just never had a friend before. It's kind of weird." I tell him.

"Yeah. I know. I usually don't talk to anyone and I've been going to this school all four years. Everyone thinks I'm some kind of freak." He tells me.

"Well, they wouldn't be too far off." I say. He just stops and stares at me. "I'm kidding." I tell him.

"So, who were you running from earlier, you know when you went all Jackie Chan on me?" He asks. I chuckle a little bit and scratch the back of my neck.

"Yeah. My english teacher. He was following me in the hall trying to ask me about a free write that I totally didn't actually mean to write. He said to use our imaginations and apparently mine was a bit too much for him. Now that I think about it he read over those really fast. I have him for my last class and we handed them in right before the bell rang. Ugh." I say running my hands through my hair.

"What? He's an english teacher. Some english teachers are able to read fast." He tries to reassure me. I look at him and just shake my head.

"No. I noticed it in the way he was walking after me. He may have been holding my paper but I know what he was trying to do. I'm just glad I didn't step any closer to him. I'll go and confront him. You stay away. I don't want you to see me go all crazy again. If that happens which with my luck it most definitely will." I tell him. He nods and a sad look comes on his face. "Oh, come on. Don't look sad. I'll come and find you when I'm done, okay? Just wait outside for me." I tell him. His face brightens up automatically and he nods and starts heading for the door. "Okay. Prepare yourself." I tell myself. I walk back in the direction of the classroom taking deep breaths. This is the first time in a long time that I've had two attacks in one day. I walk up to the classroom but don't feel any kind of a presence in the room. I decide to open the door anyway and see the real teacher tied to a chair and gagged. This is great. I walk over to him and take the gag out of his mouth. "Where is he?" I ask him. He just looks at me with fear in his eyes. "Oh come on. I'm not going to hurt you. Just tell me where he is." I tell him.

"I don't know." He tells me. I roll my eyes and sigh. "I'm serious. The last time I saw him he was chasing after you in the hallway saying something about lost property or something." He says. I run my fingers through my hair and take a deep breath. Okay think, where would a demon that's after me go or what would he do in order to get to me? I think about it for a second and then the one person that I've gotten close to pops into my head. Thomas.

"Dammit." I curse at myself as I start to run out of the classroom.

"Leaving so soon? I thought we could have a nice little party. Maybe barbecue a few humans." He says. I smile to myself. I make my face a mask of panic as I turn around to see him holding an unconcious Thomas over his shoulder. "Maybe your friend can go first? Teach you a lesson? Or maybe a person who doesn't really matter to you? Just another lousy human." He says. He pulls out a knife and pulls Thomas up by his hair and then he turns to stare at me with a wicked grin on his face as he pulls the knife back and starts swinging his arm to cut off Thomas's head.

"NO!" I scream at him just as Thomas wakes up and catches his arm. He looks around to get his surroundings and sees the teacher tied up and then looks at the same teacher standing right in front of him. He looks at me with wide eyes.

"What the hell is going on? I thought you said the teacher was possesed." He asks me. The man laughs as he continues to tower over Thomas.

"Shapeshifters, pretty boy. There are more than one type of demon. She would be the most common type," He says pointing his knife at me," and I would be one of the least common types. Harder to tell apart from other humans because we take on the form so easily." He brags. Wait, this is a distraction. I have to find something silver before he kills Thomas and the teacher. "I was sent on a special mission today because I'm one of these special demons. I came to retrieve the princess for her father. He told me any means necessary and now after reading what she wrote about, I can understand why. This child is criminally insane." He finishes pointing at me but not looking at me. I kneel down next to one of the overturned desks and quietly start melting one of the legs off. I guess it's good to have powers sometimes.

"Criminally insane? How do you draw that conclusion from a paper?" Thomas asks. The demon laughs, his true laugh. I can feel the fear radiating off the human and Thomas.

"She's got some wacked out fantasies. Did you know that she dreams about killing people? She even knows who it is and how she's going to do it. Whether they will die slowly and painfully or quick. She's very calculated when it comes to this stuff. She says she doesn't like fighting but we all know that's a lie." He says. I feel sorry for this guy. I mean I get that not all demons are as bright as I am but this guy is just plain stupid to let himself get distracted like this. The leg finally melts off and I quietly pull it away and hold it by the foot so that the jagged edge is ready to pierce through his heart.

"Did you even actually read it? Or just the select parts you wanted to?" I ask him. He turns around and his eyes widen at the sight of the silver weapon in my hand. "If I recall, on the first page, I wrote that the first would be today, after school. A demon who took the shape of one of my teachers of course I didn't actually know whether you were a possesor or shapeshifter but I had narrowed it down to those two. I made sure to come prepared for school today. Well, without weapons because I would have gotten in trouble and I don't want to ruin my good girl image." I say smiling innocently. His eyes go even wider. "I'm not insane. I can promise you that. And it's not like I want to kill anybody, you just leave me no choice. So, I either drive this makeshift silver stake through your heart or you slither back home and let my father deal with you." I say. I let a crazy grin come across my face and my eyes go wide as I try to make myself look insane to try and scare him off because I really don't actually want to kill him. He squares his feet and I pout. "Fine." I drop my arms to my side and souch down a bit. "Shall we dance?" I ask. My face is completely straight as he starts moving toward me very quickly with his knife out in front of him. I stand up straight and decide to go ahead and let him stab me. It goes though my heart at the exact same time that mine goes through his heart. I hear him gasp. "You should've run." I whisper in his ear as I twist the spike and pull. He falls and I pull the knife out of my chest. A pain wracks through my whole body causing me to fall to my knees. I look at the knife through blurry eyes and see that it had been dipped into copper.

"Sam? Sam! Hang on! I'll get you help!" I hear Thomas yelling at me but I'm too far gone. I guess he was smart afterall using a knife like that. The one thing that I'm allergic to and it's almost deadly. I feel myself fall onto my side and finally I lose all feeling and everything goes numb and I go to the place that I know all too well.
