IT FEELS GOOD to feel nothing. I'm drifting weightlessly on a cloud of bliss. My thoughts, my fears, my nightmares are there but numbed into submission. I can't feel anything else except the way my high makes me feel. I've missed it, more than I thought I did. I don't know why I ever thought about quitting. It's a rush. I'm an adrenaline junkie searching for my next big thrill.
I don't know what time it is, I don't even know where I am, but I know Selena is here with me. She keeps fuelling me with that sweet, sweet feeling, although I've spurned her every attempt at having sex. I can't bring myself to do anything in the state I'm in. I don't even know if I can have sex. Can a person who's paralyzed get an erection?
That's right. I'm paralyzed.
I can never walk again.
I'm broken beyond repair now.
It feels like it should matter.
It doesn't.
I'm way too checked out even to bother thinking about that, although I am enjoying the softness of her skin against my fingers and the way my hair springs back in place every time I uncoil it.
I'm just riding on a cloud, stroking the fuck out of this soft blanket I'm bundled up in. There are sounds occasionally, lights and music.
What time is it?
Shadowy figures drift in and out... Selena and I stay where we are.
And then someone is there, crouching in front of me, grabbing my chin.
"Well, well, well, look what we have here."
I blink, but all I see are shadows. The room spins. Someone strokes my arm.
"He's not going anywhere," someone purrs close to my ear.
"Let's see if your friend will come looking for you, Atlas."
The world spins, and I can't focus. I don't fight it. I let unconsciousness pull me under.
I don't know why I ever thought about quitting...
