"Moriya-san."

Rui looked behind and a random classmate approached him

"Yes?"

"Can you give this to Aoi-san? Not Nami but Y/N-san." The girl retrieved a notebook from her bag. "She left this in the classroom. Nami-san already left earlier so you're the next person I could think of. You guys are close, right?"

Rui accepted the item and he muttered a small thanks.

"Y/N.. how forgetful of you."

His thoughts eventually drifted to Y/N and the times where he first encountered the girl

Flashback:

It was in middleschool. Rui was called to the guidance office for getting into a fistfight with a fellow classmate

"He punched me first." The boy said as he glared at Rui

"You had it coming" scoffed Rui and the counselor silenced them.

"You two will stay here and reflect on your actions. Until then, you will have to wait for your parents to pick you up. I will also inform them about your fistfight so you will be given a warning."

The boys were about to but heads but was once again stopped

"Stop it, you two! Calm down and sit there."

The counselor raised her brow at the boys as they begrudgingly complied

"I have to attend a meeting so make sure to behave yourselves. If I catch you fighting when I return then you will face grave consequences. Do you understand?"

The boys nodded and the counselor left. The peaceful atmosphere only lasted for some seconds because the boys were quick to throw snide remarks at each other

"Ha! poor Rui. You will get scolded by your mommy." The boy snickered. "Oh wait- I forgot that you don't have one now."

Rui narrowed his eyes

"What did you say?"

"Your real mother got replaced by a gold-digger. Maybe she left you because you are good for nothing."

Rui gripped the boy's collar and was about to punch him until the door opened.

"Ah- Excuse me."

Both boys looked at the doorway and saw a girl their age. She timidly entered the room as she arranged some files.

"Get your hands off me." The boy shoved Rui away from him. Both of them sat down but still threw verbal spats at each other.

The girl grew uneasy at the tense atmosphere but she focused back on her task. Minutes later, the other boy's parents picked him up and scolded him for his actions. Only Rui was left and the girl who was arranging the documents."

"Stupid punk." Rui mumbled with crossed arms. He caught the girl glancing at him and he raised a brow at this.

"Do you have a problem?"

The girl flinched and shook her head. Rui ignored her but he can still feel the gaze at some point

"Um.. Here."

Rui looked up and saw the girl holding a first aid kit.

"You should at least clean that bruise of yours."

"Why do you care?" scoffed Rui and the girl just placed the kit on the seat next to him

She went back on her task and Rui stole glances at her.

"Hey.. are you related to that Aoi Nami?"

The girl nodded in response

"Are you her cousin or what?" Rui wondered. Nami was his classmate and he saw the girl talking to her at some point

"No. I'm her sister." replied the girl which made Rui furrow his brows

"How surprising. That Nami is a bit rude while you are here acting kind." Rui leaned back on his chair. "If you are really her sister, then perhaps you are just faking your kindness."

"Just like how people usually are." added Rui as an afterthought

"Ano.. I'm not really her real sister."

"What are you then?"

"I'm her stepsister." answered the girl

"Ah. So one of your parents remarried then." Rui scoffed lightly. His bitterness towards his own family problems resurfaced. "Why do these scenarios always occur."

"No.. I am adopted." the girl held a sad look and her response surprised Rui. "My parents died from an incident and I was the only one who survived."

"Oh...." Rui was stunned at the revelation

"Gomen. I shouldn't have said those things. We're not even friends."

The girl finished her task and Rui was left gazing at her.

After that encounter, Rui found himself observing the girl secretly. He managed to figure out which class the girl belonged to after following her at breaks.

He noticed that the girl was polite to others and that she showed the same level of kindness at the guidance office

"I guess she wasn't faking it then." thought Rui

One day, he stumbled upon the girl who was close to tears. She was looking for something but couldn't locate where it is. From a distance, Rui could see some snickering boys who were observing the girl

"Hehe. Let's just return her lunch when she cries."

The boys hi-fived and Rui glared at this. He approached them and spoke

" Hey you."

*(PUNCH!)*

The boy holding the lunchbox was sent to the ground and his friends were about to retaliate until the girl approached them

"Stop it, minna!"

"Tsk. Let's get out of here." The boys helped their friend stood up and they glared at Rui while walking.

Rui picked up the lunchbox and handed it to the girl.

"Here. Stop acting so defenseless. They probably pranked you since you appeared all kind."

"T-Thank you." The girl made a small bow

"How troublesome." Rui stared a the girl. "What's your name?"

"Eh?" The girl blinked in surprise. "Y/N. Y/N Aoi."

"Well then, Y/N." Rui turned around and walked away. "Goodbye."

"Um- Thank you again!" shouted the girl "Whoever you are- Thank you!"

Rui smirked in amusement and shouted back

"We're not even friends but you're welcome."

End of Flashback

Rui smiled at the memory. He touched the notebook and his gaze landed on Y/N's name at the corner

"Not friends..." Rui mused. "Because for me, you're more than just a friend."
