A day to Prom

Nova

Jordan has been nowhere to be found, he was not beside me when I woke up this morning and now I'm having breakfast he still isn't here.

"Have you seen Jordan today?" I asked Rita but she shook her head no. Where then did he go?

I was about going back upstairs to get dress, my friends and I had plans to visit the salon. The door opened and I was hoping it was Jordan but instead it was a pretty woman, she looked so familiar.

"Hi" I greeted.

"Oh, hello" she replied staring at me in a kind of way I did not understand.

"Are you here to see someone?" I asked, just then Rita walked into the living room. She stared at the woman in shock, what? They know her.

"Welcome ma'am, we didn't know you were coming" Rita told the woman who just smiled and dismissed her.

"So young lady, you asked who I was here to see" I remember her now, she was in Jordan's family picture that is, she is his mother.

"Uhm... I apologise, I couldn't place the face for a second, you are Jordan's mom"

"and you are?" I felt my body shaking, I was kind of scared, what if she throws me out? what if she doesn't let me stay here anymore? All sorts of questions ran through my mind but I still managed to reply.

"His girlfriend" her face lightened up like she heard the best news ever, this is not the usual reaction.

"My son has a girlfriend, unbelievable! I am so proud of him, come here you" she was so happy, I followed behind her as she led me to the bar, I froze one moment when she squealed.

She settled on one of the bar stools and patted the one in front of her, inviting me to sit. I remember Jordan and his friends drinking here even though they were underaged, who was I kidding? I drink as well but he won't let me, I once almost killed myself with it afterall.

"Let's chat over a drink" she told me.

"I'm barely 18" I told her, she laughed like I had said the most ridiculous thing.

"Who are you trying to fool, you drink with your peers afterall" she replied, I smiled while she got two shots and poured us tequila.

"So, you and my son, how long have you been together?"

"About two months" she smiled again.

"Where is he now?" She asked looking around.

"I have no idea, he has been gone since early morning" I told her and she nodded slowly then snapped her head.

"Did you just say since early morning?" She asked observing me carefully "Did you sleep here?" I remained silent staring at the floor. "No way! My son is now a pro!" She squealed yet again, I wonder what she will do if she found out I live here.

I had been toying with just one shot and barely drank it but she already drank several shots, Jordan's mom is crazy.

She talked about several things, told me a lot about Jordan and how much she loves him even though she is mostly away and how a mother's love for her child never wavers. I was reminded of my mom, the face of the woman I saw on the day of the wedding was different from the face of the mother I knew.

She looked stressed and unhappy, I can imagine her pain.

Jordan's mom went and brought a photo album, she seemed drunk but was still as lively.

I saw a picture of Jordan, he looked small and cute.

"This was his first day in Kindergarten, he didn't want to go" she told me laughing, probably remembering that specific day, I laughed imagining it.

Jordan walked in with his friends laughing but the froze at the sight of his mom but she smiled.

"Son" she said and got up to go meet him but his response stopped her.

"What are you doing here?" He asked her, his voice deep, laced with anger and hate, he was fuming, not once had I seen him this way.

"I missed you" she told him, her voice had dropped and she staggered while going to him.

"I was wondering what had gotten into you, it's obviously the alcohol. Guess what? I never missed you, leave!" He yelled, I shivered where I sat but was scared to intervene.

Andrew held him by the shoulder but he brushed off his hand roughly, it scared me.

"I know I....."

"I don't want to hear a thing, now leave" he yelled not even allowing her speak.

"Babe, she is your mom afterall" I told him, he needed to calm down, his eyes shifted to mine and grew a little soft, I was hoping he'd calm down.

"Why are you her Nova? Why not fix things with your own mother first before interfering into my own family issues?" He told me a little louder than normal but he wasn't yelling.

I was speechless, he just rubbed in my own problems on me, I was only trying to help.

"Sorry" I told him, tears threatening to fall, I know I'm not perfect but he knows how much my mom affects me, I just can't help but have memories flooding when she is mentioned and he knows that, that is what hurt me.

I ran up the stairs gathering my things but I could still hear him yelling at his mom, the door opened and I watched Lois and Andrew walk in.

"You know you don't need to leave right?" Lois told me, I shook my head.

"I don't know anything, all I know is that I am going home to fix my own problem, it's up to him what he does with his life" I replied and shrugged.

"You are his girlfriend, you should be there for him, I know he loves you even though he doesn't say it and he'd listen to you" Andrew told me but first I have to deal with myself, only then can I advice someone without sounding like an hypocrite.

"Thank you guys but I have to leave" I pulled my bag with me, carried it down the stairs, there they were still arguing, their eyes shifted to me, Jordan looking between me and my luggage but I averted my eyes and walked past him.

I heard him call after me but there was no way I was going back, not now! I dumped my bag in my car and drove off! Little did I know that would be my last time of seeing him........
