"I don't want to be your friend, Dawn."

......

One may call the look in his eyes dazed but only she knew he was lost in her eyes, like she was in his. Mutual thumping of the hearts resonated in the rings of the beats in the silent air. The foot he had taken back moved forward, reducing the wide gap between them. The same hand that once held the strand of navy locks moved near her cheek, ghosting over it, aching to touch the rosy cheeks.

Though she blushed, her lips quivered in response. The implication of his words made her feel some kind of way and yet, how could she be so resumptious? Should she really be hoping for more? And those thoughts reflected in her ocean irises. All the doubts, all the confusion and all the yearning- Paul couldn't help but click his tongue. It wasn't like he had asked her to just start going out with him. It was Paul's way of expressing his feelings, upfront with no facade. All he wanted to do was make her be aware of his feelings because if he doesn't, she won't ever know.

That thought on itself was terrifying enough for him. He did not know where his journey was going to take him or if he was going to die tomorrow. With this mission involving ancient relics and royal family, things were more than complicated and if that wasn't enough, Dawn was being indirectly involved in this to use as a scapegoat. Just the thought of it brought a scowl over his brows, if he could he would just demolish the whole royal family system. He doesn't care who takes the throne or who gets the power by the inheritance, all he cares about is getting out of this mess and taking Dawn with him.

The hand that once ghosted over his skin, leaned in to rest on her cheek. Involuntary so, her face leaned in his touch. It was obvious, despite having a great relationship with her peers, she was love starved, even the smallest actions of kindness that were made towards her was something she held in with great significance. He rubbed his thumb on fair skin, unwilling to retrieve his hand back from her cold cheeks. Sighing, he finally pulled his hand back and shoved them in the pockets of his night jacket. The jet colour was the best on the coldest days.

[C]"Tch. You're so troublesome." He grumbled. Even though she was used to hearing it, she hated that nickname with passion. Hands balled up in a cold fist, her brows scrunched together. With a swift pull in of her hand, she punched his shoulder. "What did I do now!? You're the one who loves to make things awkward!" And here Paul was thinking about how troubled she would, she seemed just fine to him. Though it was his intention, he thought maybe riling her up was the best option. He didn't even winced at her punch, was his body metal too? Her hand was stinging.

"Excuse me? Have you never met a honest person?"

"You call this honesty!? Calling others names is lack of manners, not honesty!"

"See? This is why you're so troublesome. You look around for too much details. Just take the L and leave."

"Take the what?! This is why you have no friends."

"I don't have friends by 'choice'. Not everyone wants chirping crickets around them, you know?"

"You-"

She could almost see him roll his eyes. Just why does she even bother with him? She hated the fact that this impolite brute was someone she was crushing on and it made her even more frustrated that he somewhat reciprocated her feelings.

"You what?"

Paul was having fun. It was hard to believe but he somewhat understands now why Blue and Drew loved teasing so much. He wasn't narcissistic like Drew or flirty like Blue, in his own mean way, he was teasing Dawn. The outburst she gave each time was more than satisfying, the way her lips parted when she let out a groan at his arrogance and the way her eyes squinted in frustration, Paul wanted to close the distance, perhaps whisper in her ear about how adorable she looked when she did those actions. Dawn hmped, she understood the reason behind his actions but it was also very obvious that this was Paul. Paul would do this even when someone was dying. He would argue with a thirsty dying man on how he would not share his water because he thinks charity is a shit-show. If Paul was going to keep this attitude with her despite almost confessing that it was HIM who was crushing on HER, she wasn't going to be polite to him either.
