What is War?

If you ask the old man, with bleeding lungs, what is war? (1)

With a wheezing breath, he'll tell you that war is pain (2)

If you asked the boy, who you walked to school with, what is war? (3)

He'll look at you, eyes empty, and shake his head (4)

And if you asked your neighbor, what is war? (5)

He will tell you that it is unfair game, with unfair costs (6)

If you ask the black man, with a missing foot, what is war? (7)

He'll lift his legs, and stare you in the eyes (9)

If you ask your sister and mother, what is war? (10)

They'll tell you it's fulfilling a duty you didn't expect to fall on your shoulders (11)

If you ask the political (poor) man, what is war? (12)

He will tell you, that war is declared by men in power, and fought by men with nothing (13)

If you ask your Chinese neighbor, what is war? (14)

With a broken accent he'll tell you war is worse than hell, for in war, everyone is innocent (15)

And if you go to church and ask God, what is war? (16)

He will be unable to tell you, for war is indescribable (17)

And if you go to the graveyard, and as your father, what is war? (18)

His chilling silence, echoes back at you. (19)
