*13 years later*
"And this year's valedictorian is.... Diamond Spencer!"
I grinned widely as I walked up the stage. Crowds of people cheered around me and chanted my name. I took the mike and looked at my fellow classmates.
"Thank you Principle Wilson. I am so honored to be the graduating class's valedictorian. We have come so far from freshmen year, and I am so immensely proud of every single one of you."
Diamond
"We used to think high school was the ending of our childhood, but I would like to think that we our now opening up a new chapter in our lives."
Diamond!
"So congratulations everyone. We did-"
"DIAMOND"
My eyes burst open as I shot up out of bed looking for the source of the noise. I turned and saw my mother with her hands on her hips.
"Diamond what did I say about setting an alarm?" Mom sighed, exasperated.
"I know, I know, I'm sorry Mom." I said. Mom shook her head before telling me to get ready for school. I quickly picked out my outfit: a white tee, dark jeans that had rips on the knee, a navy jacket, a black crossbody, and my favorite white converse. I threw my hair up into a ponytail and grabbed my phone from its charger.
"I'm ready Mom!" I yelled, jogging down the stairs. My mom set a plate of toast with eggs in front of me that I quickly ate before kissing her on the cheek and running outside so I didn't miss my bus.
"I love you honey! Don't forget to come home right after school today! We have to go to my boss's dinner!" Mom yelled as I ran out the door. Oh right, the boss's dinner. I was so not looking forward to that. We have to go every month and I have to pretend to like all of Mom's colleagues. Not that they're bad people, but if I have to hear Mrs. Covey talk about her perfect son one more time I'm going to hurl.
I quickly got onto the bus and sat next to my "best friend" Sarah. She was talking about a boy named Justin in our grade and I fought every reflex in myself not to roll my eyes.
"Oh hey Diamond!" Sarah said in that overly-sweet tone. "Justin texted me this weekend. He said he wants to hang out!"
"That's so great Sarah." I replied sarcastically, but she didn't pay attention. I sighed. I've liked Justin since 3rd grade and Sarah knows it. She acts like he's practically in love with her just to make me feel bad. I don't even know why I'm friends with her. Probably because I've been friends with her since kindergarden and I just feel like I owe it to us to keep our friendship alive. She used to be nice. But after since we came to high school she just acts like a completely different person.
After a 15-minute bus ride (which felt more like an hour because Sarah wouldn't shut up about Justin), we finally made it to school. Sarah and I walked into the building and towards our lockers. We both had chemistry first, so we grabbed our books and walked into the room, taking our usual seats in the front of the room.
"Good morning class!" our teacher, Ms. Katie started after the bell rang. "Today, we will be talking about electron configuration! Now, who knows where the electrons are in an atom?"
*Time skip to last class of the day*
"I'm gonna pass out your tests today. I am not very impressed with the scores, but there were a few students who did exceptionally well. You know who you are."
Mrs. Yang, our Algebra II teacher, walked past my desk and handed me my test.
"Nice job." she said, smiling at me. I looked at my test and saw that I got a 100 percent. I replied with a thank you just as I heard the bell ring. I quickly packed up my things and got on the bus to head home.
As soon as I got on the bus, I spotted Justin in the front. He waved me over and I sat next to him.
"What's up Spencer?" he asked.
"Nothing much, Justin. How are you?" I replied politely.
"Oh I'm good. Hey, I have a question. Would you like to go on a date with me?" He asked. I was shocked. Never would I have ever thought that the Justin Summers would ask me out on a date.
"I'll think about it." I said grinning as the bus neared my house. But we both knew that was a yes.
"Sweetie you're home!" my mom exclaimed as I walked in. "Quick, take a shower and get ready. We need to go soon."
I washed my hair and put on a semi-formal dress for the dinner. I curled my hair and put on a light amount of makeup before hurrying downstairs.

Once we got into the car, Mom turned on the radio and we jammed to Taylor Swift. I know it sounds cliche, but I absolutely love Taylor Swift. I turned up the volume as Shake It Off started playing.
"I go on too many dates, but I can't make them stay!" I sang.
"That's what people sayyyy, mhm, that's what people sayyy!" Mom sang back. We both looked at each other when we sang the mhm part and burst into a fit of laughter. The song eventually ended and we sat in comfortable silence.
"I love you, Mom." I said. She looked at me and smiled. I smiled back before turning back to the road. My eyes widened.
"Mom watch out!" I yelled. Mom snapped her eyes back to the road, but it was too late. A car collided with us at full force from the front. It sent us flying, and the last thing I heard was my mom screaming my name before everything went black.
