Marneeka
I was in the salon getting my hair done for graduation. I don't follow up with the beauty shop gossip so I sat there with my head down playing a game on m my phone.
"So how far along are you Alisha" a female voice said.
"I'm 4 months. Marcus is so excited we are having a baby. He went and spent all this money on our baby and we don't even know what we're having. I hope it's a girl" Alisha said.
I looked up and there she was, Marcus little fling. She kept talking and looking over at me. I just kept my composure.
Another woman walked in and they all hugged. I remember the other girl from when I went to visit Marcus.
"Look at you Lish, better you than me." She laughed.
"Well he came looking for me when he got out. So it was bound" Alisha said getting louder.
"Well our moments in the shower were just jail fucking. He got out and wanted you." The other girls said.
"Yeah he did. He is a charmer" Alisha smiled looking back up at me.
"Marneeka, you ready" my stylist said coming from the back.
"Yes" I said getting up.
I heard the whispers and giggles behind my back. I just kept walking.
"What are we doing Neek" she asked.
I rubbed my belly and looked down
She sat in front of me.
"Don't let them get to you. She just started coming here. She must be threatened by you. A grown ass woman threatened by you Marneeka. Fuck her" My stylist said.
"Cut it" I told her.
"What" she asked shocked.
"Cut it" I repeated myself.
She laid me back to wash my hair and do her magic.
"I love it" I said looking in the mirror.
"I'm glad you're happy. Go graduate high school and get that degree" she told me.
I walked back out to pay and them hoes was still there waiting.
"Marneeka, you're all paid for." She said.
"I didn't pay" I told her.
"It's okay, my cousin Marcus paid" she said and Marcus walked in.
I looked back at Alisha and her mouth was wide open. The other girls were staring at her.
"Damn, I'm so ready for your birthday" he whispered in my ear.
I smiled and walked out.
When we were outside I turned to him. "Is Alisha baby yours" I asked.
"It might be, but until then I honestly don't know" he answered.
"Well Serenity can use a play mate because I'm not having anymore" I smiled.
I was at graduation waiting for my name to be called.
"Marneeka George" the principal called.
I heard my grandma and Marcus scream. I walked across the stage and rubbed my belly. I started crying and thanked God.
Big mama and I rode to the restaurant together. We were getting ready to order our food when Big mama got a phone call. She had a look of worry on her face. She said we had to leave because it was an emergency.
Big mama and I got to the police station waiting on answers. A detective came out "Ms. Gertrude" the detective called out.
"Yes" Big mama stood up. She looked back at me.
"I'm detective Morris. Is this Marneeka" the detective asked.
"Yes sir" Big mama answered.
"Marneeka, I need to speak with you. This is a delicate situation that I need cooperation." The detective said looking me in my eyes.
I was confused but followed him to an interrogation room.
"So about 8 months ago you were at a bar with a young black male, Calvin was his name, correct? Sadly he didn't make it. We have a video surveillance of the shooter. I want you to watch this " the detective said pressing play.
I was watching the video when I saw the kiss between me and Calvin then I saw Marcus shoot Calvin. I gasped and cried. I figured since the video is so glitchy they can't make out Marcus's face but I know him.
"Why would you show me this" I asked crying.
"A few moments before the shooting, you were speaking with the shooter" the detective questioned.
"He was trying to hit on me. I don't know who that is" I lied.
The detective grew agitated. "Marneeka, Calvin was my son. He was a good kid and I know you are carrying his baby. I would like to help you but I need answers." The detective said.
"This is crazy, can I go." I said walking out.
I turned around "We don't need yall help" I nagged.
I went straight to Marcus house after I left the precinct. I banged on the door and no answer.
I opened the door and went to his room. I saw him sitting on the bed smoking a blunt.
He looked at me like he knew I know that he killed Calvin. I was so upset and he could tell I have beem crying.
"Why Marcus, you had Alisha and I had no one. Why" I asked crying.
"I knew Alisha wasn't shit to be serious about. So I was coming back for you. You liked that boy and he would've replaced me" he said blowing the smoke out.
"I did like him. He was my age and I was free to be me. You took that away" I yelled.
"You pregnant with my damn child. You are having my fucking baby and you was still entertaining another nigga. Where is your fault" he yelled back.
"You would've never knew if you didn't shoot him. You could've killed me Marcus" I cried.
"I would never hurt you. I didn't mean to kill him nor hit you. I was angry at what I saw." Marcus said.
"He has a family Marcus" I cried.
"I have a family too now. I'm not going back to prison." He shrugged his shoulders.
"So what are we going to do" I sat next to him.
He turned towards me and rubbed my face. "We going to be a family and be happy. I'm not leaving you nor Serenity out here alone" he wiped his tear away and continue to rub my belly.
I laid my head on his shoulder and grabbed his hand. He kissed my hand and we just sat on his bed gathering our thoughts about our life.
What a graduation night.
