The New Girl

Chapter 5

Vivian Longbottom:

My second day at classes passed by fairly quickly. I woke up late and had to hurry to get ready. I swiftly put my hair up into a messy bun and rushed through my daily makeup routine. After filling in my eyebrows, I apply sunscreen and a bit of bronzer to sculpt my face, a bit of mascara, and I finish with some clear lip gloss. I sprayed a bit of my Chanel perfume on my wrists and neck before I ran out the door.

Quickly, Sandra, Pansy, and I walked to Transfiguration, which we had with the Gryffindor's. Sandra and Pansy were already seated with another group of Slytherin's as I sat in the only open seat near Neville, Ron, and Casey. As soon as we sat down, Professor McGonagall stated that we were starting Human Transfiguration.

"We will begin with the incantation "Crinus Muto". This transfiguration spell is used to change the color of your hair. Your goal for today is to transform your hair one shade lighter. Please begin!" McGonagall exclaimed with a soft smile. After an hour of repetitive chanting, Neville had turned his eyebrows purple and Casey had successfully changed her hair from a dark brown to a golden brown shade. I didn't focus as much on my own practice as I did trying to help Ron undo his handiwork. Evidently, Ron had mispronounced the incantation and ended up with a handlebar moustache. We were wrapping up the lesson, and McGonagall was explaining our assignments.

"I don't think McGonagall gave us enough homework", Ron exhaled sarcastically, as he ran his fingers through his long red hair and leaned back in his chair.

"Well, it is the most difficult kind of transfiguration, and I think it can be really useful" Casey offered in response to Ron's defeated mood. "Vivian, did you get your hair to change colors?" she asked.

"Um, no. I was too focused on helping Ron remove his new facial hair. Plus, we started learning Human Transfiguration in Ilvermorny last year so I think I'll manage with a bit of practice." I lied. I had never had formal lessons in Human Transfiguration, but it came to me pretty naturally. Gathering my books and trying to change the subject, I ask "so Neville, are we getting hammered at the party tonight?" He looked at me, confused.

"Hammered? Party...there's a party tonight?" Neville asked with a puzzled look on his face.

"You have such a strange accent" Ron interjected, and continued "I mean, I know you're American but I didn't realize how different your accent is. You don't sound like the people on my dad's old muggle TV." Casey punched him in the arm and told him to leave me alone. We got out of our seats, laughing, we continued talking about different accents.

"Why am I always the last one to find out about these parties" Neville huffed as I put my arm around his shoulder, walking out of the Transfiguration classroom.

After I hiked up what felt like a million steps, I finally made it to my first astronomy class. I was really looking forward to astronomy, I have always been in awe of the night sky and loved to ponder what was out there. I got to class early, and Professor Sinistra explained to me that we met twice a week: once during the day and focused mainly on lunar phases and making star charts, and again at midnight to study the constellations. I took a seat near the back of the classroom, opened my textbook, and started to take notes as Professor Sinistra began her lecture.

A moment later, someone sits down in the seat next to me. I didn't break my focus on the lesson, but I did catch a whiff of a men's cologne. It was a fresh scent with hints of citrus, Sandalwood, and vanilla. "God, he smelled so good," I thought to myself. I kept my head forward but glanced in my neighbors direction. To my surprise, it was Draco. He was slouched in his seat, elbow on the table, with his hand supporting his chin. His blonde hair was long enough that it covered his eyes as he looked down at his books, and he seemed to be taking detailed notes.

I shifted in my seat and Draco looked over to me. His icy blue eyes met mine and I gave him a soft smile. He gave me a strange scowl and looked back down at his notes. Draco didn't look up from his notes for the rest of the lesson, except to check his watch for the time. It seemed like he couldn't wait to get out of class. Based on what Belle and Pansy have each said about him, I knew he was moody and could be a dick, but I've never said two words to the guy and he had no reason to be so unpleasant. A bit embarrassed, I brushed him off, and tried to focus.

Draco Malfoy:

I woke up late, and realized I had slept through Transfiguration. Hopefully McGonagall doesn't give me detention. I dragged myself out of bed and got ready for Astronomy. I was only a few minutes late, and I took the last empty seat in the back. As I sat down I realized I was sitting next to the new girl. I really enjoyed Astronomy, and I did my best to focus on SInistra's lesson but I was tempted to introduce myself to this girl.

"No Draco", I thought to myself, "a girl like her is the last thing I need in my life." I continued to take notes, when I caught a whiff of her perfume. The delicate floral and Jasmine smell was intoxicating. I glanced in her direction and her mesmerizing hazel eyes caught mine. She smiled, and I wanted to smile back, but I snapped back to reality and looked away. What the fuck was wrong with me? I don't let myself get lost in a girl's eyes, or sit around fixating what their perfume smells like. What I wanted in that moment was to get the hell away from her and out of this class.

Once class was over, I practically flew down the steps of the tower. I met up with Blaise and Theo for lunch and the two of them wouldn't shut up about the damn Halloween party half the school was going to tonight. I guess it wasn't all going to be all bad. Everyone would be in their costumes, and maybe i'll find someone for a quick fuck.
