"You seem to be awfully calm after learning of the existence of real witches."
Maya shrugged, still as cheerful as ever.
"Believe me, I've seen weirder shit. This is pretty tame compared to the time when I was caught up in some weird pyramid scheme that involved selling frogs."
"Do you mean frog organs?"
"No, actual live and healthy frogs. And before ya ask, no, it wasn't a pet shop or exotic animal breeding business."
Claire considered for a moment if her reading had been wrong, but pushed the thought away. She was a talented witch, and she would never make a mistake as simple as misreading somebody's aura. Still, it was strange for a girl who makes perverted jokes and got caught up in a pyramid scheme to somehow be pure - hearted.
"Anyways, so are all witches the same? Or do you guys get sorted in to different houses or something?", asked Maya, looking up at her expectantly.
'I suppose it would be okay for me to tell her about magic in general..', thought Claire. She cleared her throat and began.
"Magic is actually much more complicated than what you non - magic users think. It doesn't come from thin air or even the bodies of pureblood magic users like elves or witches. It comes from energy from things."
Maya nodded thoughtfully, scribbling something down on a notepad.
"Where did you get that?", asked Claire, confused. Maya shrugged and motioned for her to continue.
"For example, say you wanted to learn fire magic." She pulled out a lighter, and lit a small flame. Almost as if it were liquid, she poured some of the flame onto her palm. The skin was completely unaffected. She closed her hand tightly, before opening it again to reveal a much bigger, brighter flame. Maya stared in awe.
"I simply took a small amount of the already existing energy of the flame from the lighter, and used it to have some on my palm. Then, I used my energy to mix it the energy I separated from the flame to make it bigger." , explained Claire.
"So the more energy you add the bigger it gets, which is how you can use in combat!" Claire raised an eyebrow, but simply nodded. "Does this mean I can become a witch?"
"Correct, Mayachi. But to answer your question, it depends on the amount of energy your body has. You can become a good or decent witch if you have a decent amount of energy. If you-" "If I have a strong amount of energy I can almost become as good as a witch as you!" Claire opened her mouth to retort, but simply shut it and stared confusedly at Maya, who was beaming.
Finally she gathered her thoughts and spoke. "You... seem to be very familiar with how witches work already." Maya gave a sheepish look and rubbed the back of her head. "Really? I used to read a lot of fantasy books as a kid. Y'know, Harriet Porber, Perry Jackwill, The Tiger, The Sorceress, and The Closet? That sort of stuff. I figured that most of the stuff that was repeated had to have some truth to 'em." Claire nodded, impressed.
Looks like her reading had been accurate after all. All she had to do now was keep up the role of the perfect girlfriend until the time came.
