She rolled off of me and layed next to me on the grass and held my hand. We were silent for a while, staring at the stars.
"We should get home, it's already 12." She says. Judging by the tone of voice I could tell she didn't want to leave.
"How could you tell the time by looking at the sky?" I ask curiously.
"I just have a sense where even with no clock I always know the time."
I chuckle, then check my phone. Sure enough, it said 12:00 a.m.
"Wow you're actually right! How's that possible? Did you check your phone or something?" I frantically questioned her.
"I don't have my phone on me, I didn't want it to distract me from...well, you" She joked. The statement turned my face a bit pinker.
"Okay, we should leave. Unless you want to do anything else before I take you home?" I sat up to face her.
"You read my mind, wanna go to like Target or Walmart and buy paints and other fun things?"
I swear I love her already.
We get to the store and dart for the paint/craft section. I could see the excitement in her eyes, staring at all the paint options.
“Can we get all the colors?”  She had the most begging look on her face, I just couldn’t say no.
We grab one of each paint option and place them all in our cart. One of the many paints fell through one of the holes in the cart and onto the floor. I bent down to pick it up, but was met with someone else’s hand also trying to pick it up.
It wasn’t Charlotte’s hand.
"Oh my bad." Her voice sounds raspy and hollow, but it sounds familiar. I look up to see who it is, and our eyes meet.
"Oh Korey, hey."
It took me a moment to figure out who she was.
"Oh Heidi! Hi how's it going!" Heidi is an old friend of mine; she moved away when we were in 8th grade. She looks so much different. She has natural grey hair, which used to be long; but i could see she cut it a bit, though it's still grey.
"You two know each other?" Charlotte looked at both of us for answers.
"Yeah, Heidi's an old friend of mine! It's great to see you by the way." Heidi's expression didn't change.
"Yeah great to see you too Korey." She almost seemed annoyed. Charlotte still looked concerned. I gave her a look saying "oh honey she aint stealing me from you" and she calmed down.
"Well I'd better get going; I'm hosting a party later for my sister's college graduation and I need to clean my house. You two should come, if you'd like." She offered. I glanced at Charlotte and shrugged. She grabbed my hand.
"Yeah we'll be there!" She had the friendliest and cutest smile on her face, I smiled as well.
"Great I'll text you the address!" She sounded like she was trying to put emotion in her voice, perhaps she realized how empty she sounded.
"Sounds great, see ya soon Heidi."
"See ya both."
She turns and walks away, towards the cleaning supply aisle.
"We should go pay and head out, before it gets too late." It was already about 2 AM.
"Oh shit you're right." We darted towards the nearest cashier, the poor guy had to scan about 100 paint bottles individually.
About 5 minutes later we were finally in the car and I drove her home. She exited the car, as did I, and we stood there for a minute talking. Suddenly, she wraps her arms around me and pulls me in, we kiss once more.
"I had a great time." She says; I of course was blushing.
"So did I." I replied with a smile. She turned and walked away.
"Goodnight Korey I'll see you tomorrow!" She shouted as she went.
"Goodnight Charlotte...WAIT YOU FORGOT YOUR-" Before i could spit it out she had already closed her door.
"-coat." I smirked and got back in my car and drove off.
As soon as i got home my mother was sitting outside weaving a beautiful basket, waiting for me.
"Hi honey how'd it go?" She spoke with pride and love, she was knitting a lesbian flag colored basket.
"It went so well, I also saw Heidi at the store."
My mother paused a bit, and sat her basket down.
"Really? Is she okay? How's she doing?" She sounded concerned.
"She seemed fine, why?"
"Her family was brutally slaughtered last week, all that's left is her and her sister."
"Oh that's terrible, she's hosting a party soon, she's gonna text me the details. It's a graduation party for her sister. "
She pauses once more.
"You look exhausted, go rest honey." She said this with a small smile and a look in her eyes saying "don't ask questions". I obliged mainly because I was exhausted and didn't want to test my mom.
"Okay I will, you too momma, goodnight"
"Goodnight dear." She just kept weaving.
I grabbed a small bag of chips and headed to my room. I collapsed on the bed and consumed the chips.
What could mom be hiding? I thought. She probably was just worried about her. I decided to stop thinking about it and turned on a random documentary about murder, but I recognize the people they were talking about. This documentary was about Heidi's family. I quickly change the episode to avoid it, and I slowly fall asleep thinking about Charlotte.
