Evelyn
An irritating beep flooded my ears, soon after came the feeling of numbness all over my body. I struggled to open my eyes for minutes, fluttering, twitching, and finally creeping open.
My eyes darted around, taking in the room around me, a hospital room. I was in the hospital. I closed my eyes, letting the events from who knows when at this point play back in my mind.
Liam. Liam did this to me. I was in the hospital because of him. How did things that were going so right turn so wrong in an instant.
The sound of a door opening withdrew me from my thoughts as my eyes opened again to see a nurse emerge.
Her eyes met mine, and a smile spread across her face as she approached my bedside.
"Hi Evelyn, how are you feeling? We are so glad you are awake."
I opened my mouth to speak and had to force out a scratchy, "Okay." My mouth felt dry, my throat aches, and my tongue felt heavy in my mouth.
She took a look at the machines around me and recorded a few things on a chart at the end of my bed before she came back to my side and said with another smile, "I am going to grab Dr. Hauf, I'll be right back."
Moments later, a middle aged man with dark graying hair and in a long white jacket entered the room.
"Hello Evelyn, I'm Dr. Hauf. I've been your physician since you arrived yesterday. How are you feeling?"
Yesterday. I had been unconscious, unaware of things for a day.
"Okay," I croaked out once more.
"I'm going to check on you, if that's alright. Try to answer my questions the best you can, okay?"
I nodded in response.
He took out a light and shone it in my eyes. I winced at the light and tried to advert my gaze.
"How's your vision? Are you seeing clearly? Any blurry vision? Seeing any black spots or anything irregular," he asked.
I shook my head no.
"Good, good," he replied then moving to look at the top of my head to exam a wound I assumed. I barely could feel his gloved hands moving atop my head. He then came down to my face and gently touched the sides of each cheek and my jaw before looking at my neck.
"How is your pain level at this moment," he asked them removing his gloves and tossing them into the trash bin beside the bed.
"Not bad," I replied meekly. "I honestly feel numb. Talking is a bit uncomfortable."
"What do you remember Evelyn, any issues remembering what happened to you," he asked looking at me as the nurse took notes behind him.
"I remember being attacked by a guy I had been seeing, Liam O'Connell. He broke into my apartment and came in unannounced. He grew angry with me visiting my ex Jackson who was in the hospital. He became violent when I told him to leave. He tried to drug me and a fight ensued. My roommate came home and I lost consciousness."
"It seems like your recollection of the events that transpired yesterday evening are fitting with the injuries. We think you may have a mild to moderate concussion due to a head laceration and trauma. The loss of consciousness was due to strangulation however, which may be part of the reason it is difficult for you to speak right now. You also have several contusions to your face and body. The swelling for these should go down in a week or two. We did give seven stitches to the head laceration as well. We have you on medication for the pain and we will continue to do so until your pain is manageable."
