"Ashley! Ashley, wake up!"

I grumbled and forced my eyes open a little. "I don't wanna.." I mumbled as I pushed my head back into the soft pillows. Someone's hand shakes my head a bit. "C'mon, you don't wanna be late for school." Giving in, I turned my head to the side to see my best friend Carter, dressed for the day and holding his backpack. "Cart? What are you doing here?"

Carter giggled a bit. "I kept calling your cell, but you didn't answer. So I came here and asked your mom if you were up. She said no, and asked me if I could get you up. I even picked out your clothes." He held out a pleated dark green skirt, a white lace shirt, black leggings, and a pair of sneakers. "You're welcome."

I laughed. "Thanks, Cart." He patted my shoulder. "That's what friends are for. C'mon and get dressed, we've gotta get to school." "Aww, I wanna sleep more." He chuckled and hit me with a pillow. "Get up. I'll be waiting outside."

He shut the door behind him. Reluctantly, I pulled myself away from the soft cocoon of my bed and began to get ready for the day. "Ugh, where did I leave my hairbrush?" After about ten minutes, I'd finished changing and opened up the door to see Carter. "Ya look great. C'mon!" I groaned. "Carter, I haven't even had breakfast yet!" He shrugged. "Breakfast is overrated. Eat a big lunch." The next thing I knew, he had shoved my backpack onto my arm and was dragging me out the door by the wrist. "Bye, mom!" "Bye honey," She muttered without looking up from her cup of coffee.

"So, uh, how did you sleep?"

I rolled my eyes. "Well, I was sleeping just fine until someone woke me up." He laughed. "Would you rather I have let you be late for school?" "Well, I missed breakfast anyhow." I giggled a bit. "You owe me some of your lunch." "Half a cookie." "Full cookie." "Half a cookie and half your sandwich." "Deal. But you owe me tomorrow."

The two of us walked up to Midtown Manhattan High School. "Good luck with Miss McClarkey. Meet up at the library downtown after school?" "Yeah, sure. See you then Ash!" Carter ran off into the building. "Bye Cart."

As I walked into my first-period class, my teacher smiled at me. "Hey Ashley, look on your desk. There's some good news for you!" Looking at my desk, I saw a piece of paper. When I looked closer at it, I gasped. "I got an A-minus on the test!" "Congratulations!"

I sat down at my desk, feeling a strange sense of optimism. I don't know if it was from not eating any breakfast or the A-minus, but for an unknown reason, I felt happy. Like today would be a good day. One where the vending machine of life would give me an extra bag of chips.

Little did I know it was really about to eat my quarter.

After school, I packed up and prepared to go to the library downtown. On my there, my phone rang with a text from Carter: Hey Ash, are you almost at the library?

Yeah, I texted back. Listen, when you get there, I have something I have to tell you. It's kinda crazy.

As soon as I got to the library, Carter came up to me. "Hey, Ash." "Uh, hey, Cart. What did you want to tell me?"

"Uh, it's kind of a long story. Let's go sit down."

We sat down at our usual table in the far back of the library. "So what is it Cart?"

Carter took a deep breath. "Well, it's a little crazy. You probably won't believe me." "C'mon, tell me."

He sighed. "Alright then. So, it was my last class, and I'm staring out the window when all of a sudden I see this huge flash of blue light. And no one else seemed to see it!"

"Then what happened?" I asked him. "Well, the light cleared, and then standing there was this man. He had long black hair, white skin, and was wearing this weird outfit."

"What was he wearing?" I didn't believe a word he was saying, but I wanted to see where this was going.

"He was wearing this superhero looking armor. It was mostly black, with some gold stripes and a green cape. And also this weird horned hat. Then he saw me looking at him, and he smiled all creepy-like. I looked around the classroom to see if anyone else was seeing this, and when I looked back at him, he was gone!"

I rolled my eyes. "Yeah right." "I'm serious! I saw it!" "Uh-huh. Totally. And I saw my mom kiss the Easter Bunny in the janitor's closet." Carter groaned. "C'mon Ash! We're best friends. Why don't you believe me?" "I mean, c'mon, are you sure you aren't joking?" "Yes! I'm sure!" He stood up. "I'll be downstairs. I told the librarian I'd help her with something." "Wait! Come back! I'm sorry!" He was out of sight before I could say anything else.

"Geez, some people are kinda sensitive." I took out a book on Norse mythology I'd started reading and went over to an armchair to read it.

"That looks like a good book."

I shrieked a little out of shock. "Oh, don't be afraid, little pet."

My eyes drifted up to see who could've said that. Hovering above me was a man with blue eyes, creamy white skin, and long black hair, dressed in a strange gold, black, and green superhero-looking ensemble.

"Oh, erm, hello, sir." I sputtered out. The man chuckled. "Polite, are we? Hello to you as well, child." He gestured to the chair next to me. "May I sit here?"

"Y-yes, of course."

As he sat down, I noticed he put a long glimmering object behind his chair. "Thank you, Child. I must say, that green skirt of yours is quite eye-catching."

"Oh, uh, thank you." "Of course. Green has always been my favorite color. Now then, what book are you reading?"
