Chaise
Chaise Opened his eyes, the world slowly took shape around him. The images pulsating in time with his splitting headache. In retrospect storming up to the front gates of the Augustan Manor and demanding to see the princess wasn't a very good idea. Neither was calling the human guard a traitor to his kind and punching him in the face. Also fighting armed vampiric guards clad in heavy Dawn armor was a poor choice. Looking back he'd had a lot of bad ideas that day, he was lucky to be in a cell rather than a noose. It seemed no guard was aware of Adela's current mission, or that he had saved her over a month ago from meeting her final demise at the claws of werewolves. Funny how she seemed to mention so little to her peers.
Chaise gripped the cell bars hard in his hands and let his head fall heavy on iron. Another decision he instantly regretted. He tried to steady the pain in his skull with one hand, bracing himself with the other. He was a fool to think that a vampire supremacist would keep its word. He was desperate though. He had been doing all he could to keep the townspeople from capturing and murdering Diya themselves.
A metallic creak echoed through the cracked stone corridor.
"This isn't justice!" Chaise yelled not knowing what kind of answer he expected, nor could he see who he was yelling at. But that didn't stop him from lashing out in anger.
"Do you hear me? You can't keep me here!"
A vampire he recognized from his confrontation earlier appeared from around the corner. Unlike the Augustan vampires, her hair was brown, and her eyes were green instead of blue.
"Actually, I can keep you here. You're lucky I let you live." Zeva said, her eyes intense.
Chaise narrowed his gaze at her. After subduing the guards this vampire appeared on the scene. They exchanged quick words, and she was even quicker to render him unconscious.
"You owe us a new guard boy. Care to enlist?"
Chaise spat on the ground at her feet. "As if I'd ever work for vampires."
Zeva's previously playful smile disappeared from her face. "What was it you said to him after you killed the other guards? They aren't really dead? They'll be brought back with some human blood. Probably yours."
"I'm not wrong."
"Except for the part about it being his. Maybe we should use yours."
"What difference does it make? Mine his. It will be some humans somewhere."
Chaise watched as the vampire's expression soured, and he secretly felt a little triumphant.
"That's true." She responded plainly. "Now rather than wasting both our times why don't you explain yourself once more."
"Your beloved princess made me a promise. My friend has been accused of a crime she didn't commit, and Adela gave me her word that she would personally see to it that she receives a fair trial."
Zeva let out a small laugh "You want a high noble, no, one of the highest of nobles to personally concern herself with one petty case? She hasn't the time for that."
"Petty? My friend's life is on the line! The community burned down her home and mean to kill her! Adela gave me her word!"
The vampire said nothing to him, she simply kept her arms crossed and stared while considering his words.
Chaise cursed and kicked a bucket across his cell.
At last, his vampiric jailer spoke "Why is this person, the one accused of witchcraft so important to you? Why are you so certain she's not a witch?"
Chaise rushed at her slamming his fists hard against his cell bars, making them echo into the dank room. "You did know! Adela did tell someone? Then why is nothing being done? Let me out of here!" He yelled, shaking the door violently.
"Answer my questions first!" Zeva yelled back at Chaise.
"ENOUGH! The both of you!" A voice called out from the darkness.
Zeva closed her eyes tightly and didn't bother to turn. She surely recognized the voice and was aware of the lurking presence the whole time. Chaise on the other hand stared at the entrance waiting for the voice to show themself.
A beautiful figure stepped around the corner. Chaise recognized her slim form instantly, despite the change in wardrobe. It was who he was looking for, Adela. It had been over a month since her last visit, and it was about time they had a talk.
**Author's Note**
Hey hey, readers. Another short chapter as Chaise's often are. Looks like he has gotten himself into some trouble here. Keep reading to find how it all plays out. Or you can ask me. But let's be honest, would I tell you?
