Sea Sisters
Chapter one
I step across the sand, feeling the tiny grains of the earth sink underneath my toes. The sun is just starting to set, making the water look as if it's on fire. I take a deep breath and smell the sea salt and feel the mist from the ocean. I walk along the water edge, the waves just touching my feet, then rolling back into the crystal clear waters. What a wonderful world, the deep blue sea. I sigh and walk to a pile of rocks by the shore. I start to climb across them, tip-toeing along to get closer to the big blue. I finally sit on the one closest to the edge, and dip my feet in the water. It's chilly at first, but I soon get used to it. I remember my grandmother telling me stories of mermaids and Atlantis, and as a kid I loved it.
I sometimes think about it now... wondering if they do exist. I ponder for a moment, thinking about what they might look like. Probably glistening scales that shine in the sun, flowing hair that dances in the waves, a face that's absolutely flawless. I sigh, and look at myself in the water. Hmmf, I can't imagine myself as one. I look at my matted dirty blonde hair, my hazel eyes, and best of all, my waist. Grrr. Can never seem to lose those extra pounds... I shake those thoughts out of my head and look out to the sea. I sometimes wish I was a mermaid. No worries, no problems, and best of all, no school! I chuckle to myself, then start to think.
I have gone insane.
Am I seriously thinking mermaids exist? If they did, scientists would have found them by now! The whole world would have known! The sun has finally set and the stars have come out. I sigh; I guess I should go home now. I start to get up when I hear a splash. Huh? What could that have been? Maybe a fish... no it was too loud, had to be bigger. A shark? Hah, good one Samantha... then what could it be. I see a shadow below me in the water. What the...? I bring my feet up to my chest and hold them there, staying completely still and silent. Suddenly, I hear a big splash coming from the big boulder not far from me, and see the shadow of a human. How did she get there? And why is she there? She just sits there, combing her hair with... a piece of the reef? Who is this kid? All of a sudden, she starts to sing. Not like a bird, and defiantly not like anyone I have heard, but almost like a moaning sound. Surprisingly it sounded sweet, happy, and I will admit, she did sound good. I actually started to sway to the music, and closed my eyes. Wait a second Sam, focus. I shake my head and look at her again. I stare at her for a few minutes, then finally build up the courage to speak to her.
"H-hello" I stutter.
She looks over at me and gasps, then quickly dives back into the water. But not quick enough, because as she dived, I saw a glimpse of a sparkly tail in the moonlight.
I just saw a mermaid.
