"what the hell was that?" Rose asked as vina flopped back into her chair, face pale.
Treina and Vina shared a glance, an interesting interaction since one of them happened to be blind. Vina rolled all eight of her shoulders, crossing two pairs of arms before beginning to explain what the hell had just taken place.
"that was Ness, she one of the only violent patents here," vina started, clearly thinking over her words carefully. "She's normally as tame as they come but-" she paused looking towards the corner of the room where a camra hung from the cilling watching over the dining hall. leaning in close to whisper to rose she cupped a hand over her mouth so that none else would hear her.
"the doctors try and get her riled up, its part of the tests."
Rose leaned back, shooting both girls a skeptical look, "tests?" was all she asked, both of her new buddies nodded, and Trina opend her mouth as though to speak, cut short by the arrival of yet another person to their already crowded table.
"hello are you miss Rose?" Rose glanced up form her conversation, eyeing the very same blanke eyed styr who had taken her bags yesterday stood staring. Her unblinking blank silver eyes sent roses skin crawling as she sat there,
"yes, why?" Rose questioned, a dull and distant smile crossed the styrs face. Sending an uneasy feeling running through her, only amped up by the fearful body language of her two new compatriots. The off putting styr mentioned to the two girls sitting across from Rose,
"well its time for everyone's doctor time," she turned and motioned across the room, True to the styrs words nurses began to start herding patents out of the lunch area.
"since you don't know where or what doctor your meeting, ill be taking you to your meeting" she trilled, he voice light and ary, as she turned to Roses new frenids and said "and you two should get going, you don't want to be late do you?"
It only took the girls a few moments to hightail it out if there. Leaving rose to stand and trail behind the blanke eyed styr. Rose followed her for qute a while, her black flat shoes echoing the Clip Clop of the styrs hooves on the cold tiled floor. The sound echoing through the hallways, getting progressively more and more empty of patents as she's lead deeper into the insatuete. The continued the stroll through the white tiled halls until they reached a door. It was panted a jarring neon green and had the simple label of DOCTOR. Stamped across it.
Rose turned to ask her guide if she was free to enter but found her gone. With a jolt rose looked left and right as she tried to find where the stayr could have gone. Rose shook her head, praying that her addeld mind was just playing tricks on her; and before she could talk herself out of it entered the room.
Walking through the door her eyes were assaulted bye green, every where was bright neon green. It made her want to shut her eyes and demand that that colour be irreversibly erased. However, since the shadows seemed to subside slightly as she entered, she forced herself to continue.
"hello, and welcome. Please take a seat, there's much we need to discuss." Rose snapped her head to the side taking in the well-dressed man, sitting at the horrid lime green desk.
He was bald, and had oddly small eyes, but he was human. Or at least, as far as rose could tell. feeling uneasy in this lime green hellscape she made her way to sit in a chair directly across from the strangle grinning man, his smile just set her on edge, there was just too much teeth and not enough gum. Giving her the distinct impression of a poorly made ventriloquist dummy.
The man proved his autonomy however when he reached into his desk pulling out a thick file, its cover the same sickening green as the rest of the room.
Upon seeing him glance at her and back at the file, her whispers rushed wily to the forefront, dark shadows curing around every surface, and rose was almost glad as they muted the bright colour of the room slightly.
No,
Rose did not like this.
Not one bit.
"now, allow me to introduce myself. I am one of the many doctors here, im actually the head doctor," he said sounding boastful, "with that lovely job title, I get the joy of conducting the first doctor patent interview, badically I see who would be best to help you on your path to recovery. You can call me doctor Scot"
He then extended a hand towards the glowering girl across from him, it took all her effort not to bite it. Seeing Rose would not be shaking his hand he retracted it.
"aaah, well lets start with this." He rose out of his chair, looking out the window at the midday sun. putting rose even more ill at ease. Even with his back turned he still made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. Rose just couldn't place it, and unfortunately for rose she couldn't see the very wide smirk that rolled over his face as he began to speak.
"according to your mother, a renown doctor in her own right. You seem to be suffering from semi violent auditory and visual and hallucinations. is this true?" he started, his posture relaxed; and his voice very even and slightly monotonous.
He turned back towards her, and Rose only nodded.
"ah, I see." He paused, reaching back under the desk grabbing a pen and pad to add to his ever-growing pile of stuff. He turned to her sitting down once again.
"I want you to tell me about it, what you feel when it happens. When it first began, and what you were doing when it did." Rose once again felt the need to run, she hated the way his eyes seemed to boor right into her forehead instead of looking into her eyes. As though she was a test tube he was carefully examining instead of a person with feelings.
So, she began to speak, only pausing when things delved to far into personal matters. Carefully skirting around certain things here and there. The whispers had filled the room, and they had mysteriously stayed right at the edges of her vison. Sitting there like a dark beast, lurking and thankfully dulling the harsh lime green room, even if only slightly.
For once, she felt slightly happy that the whispers were there, if only so she was not alone with the man across from her. Truly, she felt as though they were sitting around her, curling like a protective shell to shield her from the piercing gaze that echoed from the man across from her.
Finally, her story came to a cloase and the doctors ever scratching pen slowly stopped moving against the pad. He gently placed said utensils and looked up at her once again, he stepeled his fingers as he began to speak. "now, Miss Rose; in order to continue I must Inform you your mother signed a contract allowing us to preform whatever necessary to help you in your road to recovery." He paused placing the file away and rose had a moment to appreciate her mother essentially selling her soul. "now, of corse we wount be doing anything to harsh, but you must know; not everything will be pleasant."
Rose nodded, not trusting her voice to come out as even as desired. Dr scot said, "so can I be assured that we will have your compliance?" rose looked directly at him, her blood pumping loudly in her ears, the sound competing with the already hissing whispers, she so despratly wanted to jump over the desk and sock this man in his sickening grin.
But the calm collected half of herself buried within begged her to keep up the "dumb blond act" and though it felt as though something inside was breaking. She complied, she did her patented head tilt and smile. Feeling revulsion coil in her stomach as the man in front of her, lapped up her act.
"of corse doctor, I want to get better." Rose said, forcing a cheary tone, even though it made her chest tighten with anger.
With a light chuckle and a few mumbled affirmations that sent roses skin crawling, the doctor began to fiddle with the small digital clock on his desk, or at least; rose thought it was a clock. Two long wires with circular attachments were pulled from underneath, and the doctor held his hand out; as though expecting rose to give him her own two hands.
She raised a skeptical brow, the whispers curling a little louder into her ears. She had to play her cards right however and thus gave him her hands, the small wires were attached with the circular pices of stikcy tape. The doctor nodded and his simile widened ever so slightly, he fiddled with the machine and a light a buzzing could be heard.
"now Rose, im going to ask you a few questions" he paused grabbing a few large cards from the seemingly endless amount of supplies hidden behind his desk. "if you answer incorrectly, this machine" he paused to tap the clock looking device. "will give you a little zap."
Rose felt her pulse kick into high gear, would this hurt? A small sarcastic part her assured her that no, of corse not it was going to tickle. While the much more prevalent part said that yes, judging by the horrid glint in this doctor's eye, and the far to comfortable smile stretching across his face. This was defiantly going to hurt.
"whets your name?" he began, probably calibrating the machine Rose reasoned.
"Rose" and though she tensed, no shock came, the doctor nodded; and wrote something down on his board. "what is your room number?" he asked, tapping his pen to his lips awaiting an answer. "seven" came her prompt reply. And back and forth they went, Rose partally zoned out by the monotony of the session.
ZAP!
Ok that got her attention. The force of the shock sent her gasping, how could such a small box diliver such a large charge? But more importantly, what had she said to warrant such treatment; qucily thinking back to the last question, it had been a simple question of "what colour are your eyes?"
For some reason, it seemed rose couldn't remember what she had responded with. Before she could collect her thoughts another question was asked, answered, and another shock was delivered. What had it been that time? Rose tried to remember what had been asked but, her normally sharp mind felt; fuzzy. Only one though seemed to poke through.
I hate this guy.
Three more zaps and Rose couldent help but notice how dry her mouth had gotten, how long had she been here? her mind still felt fogged, the next thing she knew her restraints were being unlatched. Wait, restraints? She glamced down at her wrists when had they been tied to the chair? Where they always attached and she just couldent remember? Her stomach felt as though someone had sucker punched her as the thought hit her, i really am going crazy aren't I?
"well Rose, from this exercise I think I know what doctor to assign you," he muttered, his smile still stretched wide across his face, the light from the window hitting his teeth at odd angles and casting ominous shadows around his bald head.
"ill have miss megato show you out. Perhaps she can show you around the facility."
Rose nodded standing, the dark wisphers seemed to press in as she stood, her head feeling light and her feet feeling unsteady. ." Rose turned to face him once more, finding with only slight surprise that her blank eyed guide was standing next to her.
She shook her head, there was no way she was here the whole time; right? Rose couldn't focus, between the horrifyingly comforting feel of the whispers surrounding her and the fuzz that seemed to take hold of her mind. What time was it again? Oh it seemed she was fallowing the lady now.
She shook her head glad to be away from the horrid man sitting in his lime green office, and very happu to be away from his zapping box, two small rased bums on her skin were all that was left over from that small 'test' though it felt like her whole body felt stiff all over.
"alright miss rose let's start our tour!" the started to stayr lead her all over until they found the dinning room again, it seems rose had missed lunch.
The styr led her down the path leading off towards a long twisting hallway filled with rooms. Each one solid metal with an electric lock on the outside. They all had numbers, the stayr told rose that they had over one hundred and fifty guests. Now including rose herself.
Soon she had been shown the medical ward for those who are injured, the solitary ward, for those who cannot be near others or just need, 'extra special care'. She was on her way to the lower portion of the faculty when she saw something that set her skin crawling once more, as she and her guide stepped into the elevator.
At first, she thought it was just a floater or a speck of dust close to her eye. A glance beside her, however, proved her theory wrong. A pale grey shadow, in the shape of a man, floated towards her guide leaning in close and whispering something rose thankfully couldn't hear. This actually did not surprise her. What did was when her guide smiled and nodded slightly as the apparition faded away. Then rose did something stupid.
"could you see him?" it was a simple question, one she was already sure of the answer to, yet when she heard it, her heart still felt like lead all the same.
"see who?" the tilt of the head the facsimile, Rose could tell when someone was lying. Or at least she desperately hoped she could, and that the creeping sensation she felt while she waited for the elevator to reach its floor was not the creeping sense of encroaching paranoia. That would be a bummer.
DING! Rose was saved from the eery silence thanks to the loud bell, the elevator had reached the bottom floor. It opened up into a large open area that was filled end to end with water. Only a small ring around it had dry sand.
"this is where we keep our aquatic patients, such as the sea dwellers," rose nodded. A rarity these days they might be, but any self-respecting history buff knew a great deal about sea dwellers. In fact, she saw a few of their dark shapes shifting below the surface as one of the doctors slowly walked out of the dark water.
He was tall and well finned, a sea dweller himself. He wore a now sopping wet doctor's uniform and nodded towards Roses guide as passed entering the elevator behind them and haphazardly trailing in a small puddle of water. Thankfully, he ignored them.
"We host social swims for all those who we deem safe enough to come out and enjoy. Hopefully, you'll be on the list." And just like that, they had joined the doctor in the elevator. Nothing left to discover withing the water-filled chamber, the ride up was just as odd. Rose could not help but let her eyes wander over the doctor she was standing next to.
He had dark short cut hair with a purple streak through it, and large fins that seem to take the place of ears, a long scar lay etched across his face. Looking quite old, thankfully, Rose could stare unabashedly thanks to how absorbed in his notes he was. How the small notebook and pen survived his underwater excursion was a mystery, one rose was sure she would find out eventually.
So, with only a slight tremble in her step is she led towards something her guide calls "the backyard" and what a beautiful place it is. A small fountain surrounded by larger rocks on all sides, a row of trees previously blocked by the building made themselves present as well as a small area of lush green grass. A short stone pathway winds the whole way around the perimeter of the backyard.
Rose made a note of it and promised herself she would walk on it at least once a day to stay in shape. It was while studiously inspecting the stonework that she heard the telltale clip-clop of hooves. She snapped upright to attention, her mind going to the immediate conclusion that she was beginning to experience her first new form of auditory hallucination since arriving.
But just as she began to brace for the full impact of the screeching and hissing of her least favourite horror terrors, her eyes found the real source of the sound. She wrapped herself in her arms, a defensive gesture she had developed that hides trembling hands quite well.
Clip clopping a small bit away from them was a centaur, with the full lower body of a horse and the upper body of a "man." He was wearing a guard's blue uniform top that had an elongated piece of fabric attached at the back to cover his barrel, as well as his plot. Giving the allusion of him being well dressed while simultaneously allowing full mobility of his four equine legs.
Rose cast one last furtive glance in his direction before looking to her guide. Who had turned and began walking back inside? Rose made to follow, as she did, they passed through the door and back into the large circular room that was the lunch hall, In which they had started their short journey. The styr looked dead into roses eyes, standing shoulders squared.
"for the last portion of our tour I must lay some ground rules" instantly caught off guard with the sudden shift in tone, rose nodded numbly. "So, you are not to be out of your room after twelve o clok, noare are you to try and leave your room until it unlocks in the morning." The syr began. "you will do as the guards and doctors say, and you will take all medication given to you." Rose nodded again, the whispers that seemed to be clinging quite firmly today pushing in. "finally, you are not to enter any rooms marked with the words, staff only. The repercussions will be a stint in solitary."
Suddenly the stayer smiled once more turned and began walking away, the fast switch from cheery, to oddly stern, and back leaving Roses head spinning. "well that concludes our tour miss, you've been a pleasure. I'll leave you to your own devices until dinner. A bell will sound so, please be present here for dinner, since you have already missed a meal"
Rose slowly made her way around to her favored table, by the window. Slowly she reached into her large sweater pocket and pulled out her journal, flipping through its blank pages as she found a pen, she had taken with her from home, and began to draw, sketch and wright down her experiences here.
Slowly time passed as she filled the blank pages with spiraling lines of ink, she was just beginning to draw a few unflattering sketches of dear old doctor scot.
She heard a very loud sound ring through the institute, and as the smell of food began to waft to her nose, she glanced at the serving area. supposed to find workers already standing there, how had she missed them? She shut her journal with a snap and placed both it and her pen back inti her large sweater pocket. Standing to go and grab some dinner before a line has the chance to form.
Stepping up she went through the same song and dance as before, giving the bored looking man behind the counter her name and room number. This time however, she was given a dinner time style of food. A pale grey looking steak, as well as some yellow potato's and a bunch of super green peas.
She thanked the creatures, taking their grumblings as a your welcome. Slowly she went to sit down, watching as the dining area filled slowly with patents. Beginning to participate in one of her most favored pastimes, peephole watching. Many patents caught her eye, one looked like a mix between a lizard and a human, making a very cool dappled scale effect. One that Rose was fully intending on using in her drawings later.
The next person that caught her eye was the very same small girl that rose had seen attacking a guard that very day, flanked by the centaur guard rose had spied in the garden. They seemed to be having a heated discussion. Rose couldn't help but feel a little off balance, this girl was super small; and abaslotly adorable there was no way this small kid could turn into a bloodthirsty animal. The fluffy ears sticking out the side of her head weren't helping; Rose was instantly reminded of her old pet cat.Her attention was drawn away quickly, when a suddenly an odd feeling washed over her, something akin the smell of cinnamon filled her nose, contrasting sharply with the dull and flavorless smell emitted from the food from the kitchen. She glanced around and her eyes trained on Vina walking into the dinning hall. she seemed to be trying to calm someone down, upon closer inspection. It seemed she was talking to the very same boy that had been removed from the dining hall earlier. The two grabbed their trays, and both began walking in the general direction of Roses table.
The boy stormed past, walking through the door to presumably eat his meal outside. His head down and his expression sour, but; it seemed he wasn't yelling or screaming so that's a plus in Roses book, as he passed he shot a look at rose, so fast rose thought she might have imagined it. There was a light scrapeing noise as the boy made his way through the door leading into the yard.
"hey blondie!" Rose jumped as Vina appeared beside her, the smell of cinnamon all but gone. It only took a few minuts for the two to ease into polite conversation, Rose noticed, one again that the girl in front of her finished her food quickly, one of her arms always protecting the plate. As though she half expected someone to steal it away if she wasn't carful.
Soon enough Terina joined them, and the dubious duo was reunited, Rose couldn't help but look on in wonder as the two girls chatted like old friends.
Eventually the topic of doctor's meetings came up, and the two comrades feel oddly silent. Vina and Terina had finished their food, and began to stand, "we need to talk to you about something," vina said, her normally boisterous tone diled down, "but not here, lets head outside." Terina finished, Vina pointedly looked at the cameras and gaurds before taking Terina's arm and slowly making her way to the door,
Rose trailed along behind, leaving her half eaten food on the table, glad for any excuse not to 'enjoy' the horridly made meal. The trio made their way into the yard, the light of the sun slowly beginning to dip below the horizon casting the green plants in a warm gold hue, Vina lead the group to sit by one of the large trees, and Rose wondered where the boy from earlier could have wondered off to; he was nowhere in sight.
But Rose deicided there were more pressing matters to attend to, if the strened Exprsoons of her new aqantaces were anything to go by.
What could have them so on edge?
