Rose still lay awake when the strange version of birds that reside on this planet began to sing their songs, sounding almost exactly like violin instruments, with small chittering squeaks breaking up in-between.
Slowly they got louder gave a wonderful crescendo before petering off, Rose raised herself wearily off of her bed, and made her way to the bathroom.
She wrapped her arms around herself brushing her hands along her shoulders and arms to sooth her frayed nerves. Stopping only when she trembled no longer.
It took a while, but after glancing at her timepiece, she realized it was round 6 o'clock in the morning. So after franticly brushing her teeth she slipped out of her nightclothes.
And stumbled into the shower, with abandon she turned the heat up to max and stepped in, heedless of the cold at first. It appears it just could not bother her.
She simply stood there for a while as the cold droplets of water that hit her slowly warmed, before beginning to tun quite hot. The shower that followed went as most showers do. Scrubbing to rid oneself of filth. Thankfully, it was rather uneventful for the young woman,
But she became startled when she put conditioner through her hair, her hands shaking as she found the edges of her hair had begun to lose color, leaving a gradient, of stark pale white fading into her golden blond the closer to her scalp it reached.
She stepped out of the shower and wrapped herself in one of the scratchy towels provided by the institute. Rebrushing her teeth she did her best to brush the tangy taste of salty brine out of her mouth, doing her best to keep her mind from wondering how the hell she was able to retch up something she did not consume. She glanced in the mirror, almost startled by the person staring back at her.
The startling white ends of her hair gave her a ghostly look, and the deep smudges under her eyes assuredly were not helping the aesthetic, carefully she grabbed her makeup and went to work putting her makeup in place, trauma be dammed if she went down, she would go down looking as graceful as a cat.
It took around twenty minutes to finish putting on her war face, and ten to change and tie back her hair with nice purple ribbon snatched from her still unpacked suitcase.
Soon she was looking out the window, watching a few bright orang violin sounding songbirds flutter past. Their ten red eyes reflecting the rising like little jewels, that very sun soon began to come over the horizon, and almost all at once came pouring into Roses room that Dear reader is when something very jarring happened.
The moment the light hit her... silence reigned supreme, like millions of whispers that cried out at once were then cut off from connection. Leaving dead silence, Rose stood stalk still, her head reeling as nothing, but a barely audible static could be heard in her head.
As possibility's ran through her mind Distantly, she finally got a wonderous feeling she had not felt in months, she had the feeling of being utterly by herself. She felt a few wet tears of relief fall down her cheeks as warmth pooled in her chest.
More and more seemed to accumulate the longer she stayed in the sun, it felt as though a great darkness was being evaporated from under her very skin. Even her head that she had not even realized had been pounding with a migraine felt so much better.
Testing something, she slowly stepped out of the bright sun. wishing greatly that she could stay within its rays forever, the darkness gobbled her up and cloaked her easily, "Hello?" Rose called, daring for the ever-imposing whispers to return, her heart felt light and happy, but still the very real fear that they might return trickled down her neck.
Though the warmth stopped pooling in her chest, no whispered returned, at least not yet.
With a sigh she moved to sit on her bed, though feeling warm, and happy that she had her thoughts to herself at least for at time she still got next to no sleep, and tiredness clung to her bones. while a sort of nervous anticipation had already started eating at a corner of her thoughts.
Though her thoughts were interrupted by the buzzing and clicking of her door lock. Gently rubbing a thumb over her bruised knuckles, she stood to make her way to breakfast. Just hoping her friends would not notice the change.
Shortly she had finished the whole song and dance required to acquire her subpar batch of breakfast. Slowly she scuffled her way towards her favored table, loving the fact that she would be in direct sunlight. The second her skin touched sun; the warmth began once again pooling in her chest.
Then, like magic the dubious duo showed up, right off the bat Rose could tell that they knew something was up.
Terina's movements were tense while Vina did her best to put off an air of indifference, but it was very clear through how many of her hands were fiddling about that she was just as on edge about Roses sudden appearance change as Terina.
The two girls stood with their trays for a moment before sitting down, "Ok right off the bat, what? Are you wearing perfume or something? Because I don't know how you're doing that but its freaking me out."
"Yeah, sorry to be rude but what happened? Did you die your hair?"
both Vina and Terana seemed to stumble over their words, and though the ever- present snark in Vinas voice was still there, there was an undelaying shift. As though something in their dynamic had changed. "No, I am not wearing perfume, I often find it overpowering." The duo before Rose shared a glance, once again a very odd occurrence.
"well uh, you smell different. I know that might sound odd but its kind how I tell who, who is around here." Rose nodded, and she said one word that would probably explain what was going on quickly.
"Tests" she mumbled, scooping a full spoon of soggy grey eggs into her hungry mouth. "Shit Rose your hand!" Vina exclaimed, as Rose lifted the spoon. accidentally Giving her a good view of the split and bruised knuckles on her hand, making Rose regret punching the glass so many times that last night.
"You should see the other guy" Rose muttered, her mind flashing to the pile of ash she had left sitting in that dark room. Rose looked up when she heard sniffling for a moment, she though one of the girls was crying, but a glance upwards showed Terina sticking her nose in the air.
"God dam It Rose I can smell your bloody knuckles from here, after breakfast your visiting the med wing to get it looked at, the last thing we need is for It to get infected."
The sniffling girl insisted, Rose shot both girls a tired look simply nodding. Her voice still sore for her shouting last night, yet she did feel a small smile begin form at the thought of visiting her favorite nurse.
"Ok what the hell did you fuckers do!" shouted a very angry looking Carson peeled off from the line up for food, marching towards Roses table, glancing between the three girls he slammed his tray down glaring daggers at Rose, "I can feel your fucking anxiety all the way from the meal line! What-" he stopped his angry red face going pail at the sight of Rose up close, his eyebrows Rose tighter and many different emotions played across his face like a stage.
"Rose, what in the ever-loving fuck happened, tell me who did this and ill gut them." Carson said, his voice filled with a quiet tremble that belied his boiling temper, she could see his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. And she could practically hear his jaw cracking with the force of how hard he was grinding his teeth; the display felt endearing, never in her life had someone gotten angry for her.
At her? Oh, more times then She could care to count, but for her? Never.
The attention was making her feel small, and she receded into her hoodie, tucking her hands into its pockets, and clenching her hands, why did this have to be so awkward?
"Tests," was the only word she uttered, gently placing a hand on his shoulder, and pushing him into a seat. "Fuck tests ill beat their face in..." Carson said picking up his fork and stabbing his eggs with far more force then necessary. Letting out small angry grumbles and guttural explanative as he worked his aggression out on his breakfast.
"She's ok Carson, chill out, we have a plan remember?" Vina hissed, "And we don't want anyone else in solitary." Terina soothed, reaching out to pat him on the shoulder, finding his head she patted that instead, Rose noticed how much the Acton soothed him.
"I know... but look! Her hair is changing it's the first signs your being messed with!" he insisted, pointing to his eyes, "look these used to be green! But since being here they turned them brown!"
Rose began to connect pieces of the mutations she and her friends had experienced, wondering what about the ways her ally's had changed, but she gently quieted him down. Valuing their cover over her curiosity.
Soon the group lapsed into slightly tense, yet kind conversation as they all finished their breakfast, Rose looked out the window, as a particularly heated debate took place about what type of milk was best.
Her eyes found two unfamiliar rings in the sky, reminding her that this place was not her earth. Leaving her stomached feeling a bit unsettled with the strangest bought of home sickness Rose had ever encountered.
The sky itself was a reminder, the familiar bright sky blue, replaced here with a much darker teal hue. Soon Rose excused herself, making her way towards the medical wing.
With any luck she would soon be chatting with Kann, perhaps she will have even finished checking out the pills as Rose had asked.
Turning the corner and entering all to familiar medical wing, Rose felt hesitant to call out, the small cut on her head still sending small jolts of pain through her forehead. But a glance showed no sign of Kann, she did spy someone new however, and began to pad her way towards them.
"Hello there," she said, signaling her approach, lest the man be skittish. Turning towards Rose, she got a good look at the man, clearly a nurse. He stood about a foot above can in Hight and nothing, but an off-putting scowl found his features as he laid eyes on Rose.
"Can I help you?" he said, his voice growlish and deep. sifting through the medical supplies he was currently busy sanitizing. As Rose came closer, she noticed that this male was Allron.
Belied by his curling clawed hands and sharp pointed teeth, judging by the way he was looking at her, he most surely followed the Cast system held so rigidly in place.
A cast system that Rose believed this man might be exceedingly high on, if his predatory gaze, stance, and general vibe were to say anything.
"Yes, may I see miss Kann?" Rose asked, letting a small hopeful smile stretch her features. The man put down the scalpel he was sanitizing, and Rose did her absolute best not to imagine what it had been used for. He glanced at her his scowl stretching further into a harsh grimace that showed his sharp hooked teeth.
"The head nurse is busy" He hissed his eyes narrowing, instantly Rose felt her pulse under her skin and for the first time ever, wished her whispers were there so that they might make her feel less alone.
Taking an involuntary step backwards, Rose felt just bold enough to try again. "Listen, I'll just be a few seconds-" the man slammed his hand down on the desk effectively cutting her off, and shooting Rose a glare filled with so much hatred it sent her looking for the nearest exit.
"You will do as I say patent! I am your better! Now, unless you are injured, leave this ward! " the man yelled as he took a few threatening steps towards her, his Hight, size and hooked claws sending Roses flight or fight instincts into full gear.
Her mind was thinking a million miles a minute, on this world he would be perfectly within his rights as a predator to kill her.
As an omnivore she was lower on the cast system then him and judging by his all to violent reaction, her being human assuredly did not help.
So being the very smart young lady she is, she turned on her heel an began to leave. Fully intending on coming back another time, perhaps she would tell kann about this horrid man.
"Excuse me! Marcus I hope you aren't harassing another patent..." the soothingly sweet voice Rose had come to greatly appreciate filled her ears and she turned back around.
storming out of her office Kann marched right up to the still snarling man. Grabbing his shoulder in one hand she glanced towards the tall man, all at once Rose saw the color drain from his face as he turned to see Kann, an odd thing since she too is a fellow human.
"Miss Kann," he started his voice strained, Rose couldn't quite see Kann as the man blocked her from Roses view but judging by the startled fear in his voice, she was quite frustrated and very scary.
"Now Marcus, we have talked about this, why don't go and take your break now." She said, sounding like she was chastising a unruly child and not a terrifying predator that could have panted the walls a cheery color with Roses innards.
The man stormed past Rose, clutching his shoulder in his hand, and paying her no mind. Rose turned her attention to Kann, and slowly made her way to the now beckoning head nurse. A small smile graced her face as she glanced at Rose, and Rose felt her own expression mirroring it.
"I am ever so sorry you had to meet Marcus; he is truly a pain." Kann said a small bit of unfamiliar venom tinging the normally sweet Kann's voice.
Shaking her head with a light chuckle Kann turned her full attention on Rose, for a second as kann looked over her she thought that Kann might be having a stroke. Her expression had gone stiff and her green eyes had frozen wide after flicking up and down.
Then a very quiet, "Rose, what happened?" a pause "And who did this" Rose felt a heavy lump in her thought as she began to try and take deep breaths, slowly she began to explain what had taken place last night, but she only got as far as waking up in that horrid glass cell, before breaking down.
She felt herself being scooped into the air and carried a ways, before being set down and wrapped up in something warm, glancing up she realized she had been carried into the small back office that Kann had emerged from moments ago.
Kann had situated them gently on the floor with Rose resting In Kann's lap, the warm something wrapped around Rose just so happened to be Kann's arms.
Kann kindly whispered promises that she was indeed safe now, gently rubbing circles into Roses back. After a few more minutes Rose continued, and Kann's grip only tightened as the Story went on, never harsh, just protective.
For what must have been an hour, Kann held Rose letting her cry out her stress gently telling her that she was fine, and that she just had to breath, she was so good Rose had to wonder how many people she had helped like this before.
Eventually, thanks to Kann's soothing. Rose had calmed down enough to pull her face from Kann's shoulder, taking note of how damp Kann's uniform had become, due to her torrent of tears.
She investigated Kann's face and saw something that made her Rose feel many different things. She saw the calm façade that Kann was currently trying to emit. She also saw the rage boiling like a geyser behind Kann's Jade eyes. Rose just hoped that anger was in no way her fault.
"listen, I know this is all hard to believe, but I swear! I'm-" Rose started Cut of when Kann placed a finger to her lips.
"I believe you Rose, I might not understand fully, but I do believe you." With the same finger placed over Roses lips she shifted to point at a desk many machines and scientific pieces of equipment Rose had no hope of knowing stood there, along with them, the pills that Rose had given Kann seemed to rest on the table as well.
"I tested them and they matched the same for every patent." another gesture had Rose looking at several small containers concealed under the desk, each had a name written across the label and each seemed to hold the very same type of medication that Rose had almost taken her first day here.
"It seems like these meds are a mental suppressant, but like many different forms of medication, it has a building effect, for a institute like this." She paused gently running her hand soothingly over Roses hair, tucking in a lose strand. "it could greatly impact any mental patent, I believe your right Rose, this place seems to be some sort of horrid ruse." She shook her head letting her arm curl back around Rose still holding her gently.
"I fully plan on staying after hours tonight, I won't venture to deep into this behemoth of a facility, in fear of getting caught, so you have no need to worry about me." Kann paused she cheeks dusting red as she continued.
"though I do appreciate it." Gently she began to stand taking Rose with her, and once again Rose marveled at the slight woman's hidden strength as Kann helped her stand.
Kann kept a hand on one of Roses shoulders and helped her stay steady.
Nodding Rose did her best to assure herself what she just heard was in fact real. Kann believed her? Just like that? A whole new flame of adoration burned to life inside of Rose, as she glanced at Kann's fierce and determined expression.
"Are you ok now? The events you have just been through are serious, in fact after all this Is over, I do suggest we all visit a proper therapist."
Rose nodded happy. It looked like she would be able to convince Kann to join them Afterall. So, finding her footing, Rose began to explain the plan, and to her relief. Kann nodded along the whole time, with a kind expression and the will to help burning in her shining green eyes.
With long watery smile that broke her face, Rose took a step back and offered her hand out to Kann once her plan was done.
"Want to be my partner in crime? At least for a little while?"
Kann took Roses warm hand in her own, her familiar kind smile gracing her face.
"It would be my pleasure Rose. Where do we start?"
