She flipped on to the next page of her book as she let out an audible gasp, the original suspect had also been murdered. her eyes scanned the page as she stared at the novel in awe, slouched on the couch with her fist under her chin.
In the midst of a quiet lazy Sunday afternoon, a loud pounding at the door startled Eliza Cooper. She abruptly looked up from her book at the hallway and waited a few seconds to see if anyone else was coming before reluctantly getting up and dragging her feet to the door.
" Oh, its you", said Darien Finley with a scowl on his face and narrowed eyes as soon as she opened the door. Darien lived in the house across the street.
"MOM", Eliza called. "I live here"
"I live here", Darien mocked annoyingly.
Eliza rolled her eyes, walked off and plopped on the couch. She picked up her novel once again and skimmed through the page trying to find the exact line she left it on.
"Hello sweetheart, come on in", said a disembodied voice stepping down the stairs
"Hello Mrs. Cooper, mom sent cookies", he said walking in.
"How lovely, tell her I said thanks. Oh I almost forgot, she left her watch here yesterday. Wait here".
Mrs. Bethany Cooper climbed back up the stairs.
Darien kept the green cookie plate on the small side table and paced around the living room . He came behind the couch and leaned on the back pillows.
Eliza could feel his breath on the back of her neck, she didn't move or react and just continued not caring when all of a sudden, a hand came from behind and snatched the book from her.
"Lets see what ya got there. 'The Silver Dagger' sounds cool", he teased
She sprang up to her feet, she dug her nails into her palm making a fist, tingling with anger, her nostrils flared.
"Look who knows how to read", she said, the exasperation her her voice was clear.
"You want it, you want it", he teased waving the book as if tempting a dog with a bone.
Eliza sprinted around the couch, Darien ran out the door on to the front porch and she ran after him, she chased him around the front yard running barefoot. he stopped in a trice, and held the book above his head with his hand stretched out. She stood on her tippy toes, stretching her hand as high as she could but she knew that she would not be able to reach it. Darien was much taller than her, she stood roughly a few inches below his shoulder.
Eliza jumped to get her book but lost her balance and fell forward, both her hands on his shoulder, his arm around her waist. She looked up at him, breathing heavily, his long brown hair framing his face, his hazel sparkling in the warm sunlight as he slowly lowered the book down.
"Darien", Mrs. Cooper called and the two quickly broke away.
She came near the front door and leaned on the doorframe. "Here you two are." She held out the watch and Darien ran up to her and got it. Eliza went up to the both of them, she saw this as a perfect opportunity to get her book back. She crept behind him and tried to clutch her book back but he swiftly pulled away and the book ripped from the top. Eliza's anger was off the charts.
"I am sick of you two fighting all the time. You should really give him a chance, he's a sweet boy", her mother said as she closed the the front door behind her.
"He sure is."
"We still have to go to the Finley's for dinner tonight, you better get things straight with him"
Eliza scoffed, as if that was ever gonna happen.
